I don’t know if this has been posted already and I won’t go into too much detail as it’s all on the link but this family desperately need help to bring their grandmother home. If anyone can donate it will be very much appreciated. If you can’t, please consider sharing the link on social media.

What’s the story?
The link doesn’t really say much.

Sorry I’ve seen posts about it on Facebook and thought it was all in there. I don’t know everything but basically the grandmother was given the all clear to travel overseas while waiting for an operation and fell seriously ill in Turkey. She’s had a major operation and is under critical care at a cost of £2k per day, which the family have had to cover. They need to get her a medically supported flight back to the UK for treatment on the NHS to avoid serious financial hardship and possible withdrawal of care.

Like stocko says there’s a bit of vagueness in the post

I don’t like to be cynical in these situations but the vagueness of the illness and the fact their travel insurance doesn’t cover them. Maybe it hasn’t been articulated very well

If she was waiting for an operation it’s likely the travel insurance wouldn’t cover anything related to whatever that was for. Im waiting for a shoulder op and when I booked my travel insurance for this year it didn’t cover anything related.

No it wouldn't and thats the risk you take travelling with a known condition but it does seem that this poor lady as had a major illness that sounds unrelated to the "minor" op she was waiting for?

exactly, I’d like to know the context as the doctors on turkey state she would almost certainly become Ill without the operation

The story on the Gazette site has more context.

The family appear to be blaming everyone but the couple for travelling, stating the hospital didn’t say they couldn’t travel and that the travel agents should have told them Turkey wasn’t covered by the GHIC they were placing reliance on. For whatever reason they’ve decided to travel with insufficient travel insurance whilst knowing one of them required an operation and the risk hasn’t paid off for them on this occasion - that’s the gamble you take when going abroad.

They have made a series of poor decisions that have lead to this outcome. In terms of garnering support they‘d gain more empathy if they’d not blamed everyone else but themselves for the predicament.
As suspected I thought they may be a reason why the full context wasn’t given on the just giving page.

I always make sure I have the right travel insurance and that's being fit and healthy. You never know what might happen. If I was travelling abroad with some sort of medical issue I'd be going over the insurance conditions with a fine-tooth comb.

It's a tough one isn't it? They have messed up it seems, but they are now a family in desperate need.
It's a false economy to go abroad on holiday without appropriate levels of travel insurance, particularly the medical and repatriation elements.

But as you say they are now a family in need but they'd get more sympathy if they could display a modicum of humility.
