Local assisted Living for the Elderly

I know, from previous conversations, that I'm not the only member with relatives affected by dementia and Alzheimer's. My mother in law is in the very early stages of this, and not ready for full time care in a specialist unit - which will come I imagine.

Right now we'd like to put her into assisted living - somewhere, where she can have her own bedroom/living room/bathroom, where there is on site facilities and 24 hour supervision.

She owns her own home and we're happy to sell it to pay for her care - but that money will run out, and while we understand that the council will pay for her, to stay in the facilities we've been shown once the money is gone, some of the places we've seen are not very nice tbh,

We've seen a brilliant place just north of Hartlepool, which isn't as close to us as we'd like it to be - it has a swimming pool, shop and hair salon on site and would be ideal otherwise. She can go there.

I wondered if there was a facility like that around Middlesbrough or where to go to find out. I assume (but don't know) that some places, like Middleton Hall / Woods, are exclusive and you can't go there then fall back on the state. And there will be a limit on what the state can pay of course - we'd have to top up the difference.

Does anyone have any experience or advise pls?

Thanks.

This maybe what you’re looking for although I think it’s quite expensive.
Hope you find the right place for her.

I had a relative with dementia and she lived in a McCartney & Stone development @ Saltburn with a live in carer in a 2 bed flat. The council will help with the cost of the carer if the savings of your mother in law are below £23,500. Even above that figure you can claim attendance allowance its about £60/week bottom rate. Younger relatives stayed at the weekend to give the carer time off. The flat was not counted as an asset/savings. The development is called Huntcliff Court.

Montpellier Manor is fantastic, but expensive. Try to contact Social Services in your Mother in laws council area. They were superb in helping us, when we needed help from them with our Mam.

Just be aware the poshest looking facility doesn't always equate to the best care especially if your parent has dementia or other specialist needs. Ask around before you make a decision on anywhere.

Thanks for the comments.

At the moment she's not that affected. Memory isn't great and she gets very anxious.
Ideally she's like a place with 24 hour staffing, but her own front door and living room, really. She's not ready to be reduced to a bedroom and en-suite. It's hard to find a local list of assisted living flats - been looking for hours today...

Meanwhile - football! :)
