When did relying on Premier League cast offs/development players play such a huge part in achieving promotion/becoming a top 6 contender?

Who helped us to promotion in the last 2 sucessful campaigns?

Michael Thomas 97/98 wasnt exactly game changing but Gaston made the difference the last time we managed top 2

The games' changed since those days, transfer fees have sky rocketed and now most successful Championship sides rely on a smattering of Premier League loans. Someone posted the other day that all of the top sides in the Championship last season had 3 or 4 top loan players.

It happens a lot more often now because of the financial divide between divisions.

Burnley's top scorer last season - Nathan Tella - was on loan from Southampton. They also had Maasten (LB from Chelsea) and Harwood-Bellis (CB from City).
Sheffield had James McAtee and Tommy Doyle from Man City - combined market value of £20m.

It's just how it is

We had about £50million worth of players on loan last season. Hopefully we will have something similar this season. We can't afford to buy players of that quality.

They may not be the finished product yet but if we pick the right ones, they'll be far better than any players we can afford to sign.

Alternatively we can try and get promoted with the players we've got....

And clearly the days of signing players like Britt, braithwaite, Flint and Saville are long gone. The sales of Tav and Spence probably funded last season's loan signings too

I'm not sure how worthwhile it'll be throwing a load of money away on loan players this year. There's too many decent teams in the division, I don't see us going up regardless.

Yes, fans forget that it costs a lot of money to bring these fellas in short term and your money is then spent.

We are going to have to get used to this. Sell our most saleable asset to fund other signings and loans and hope they are up to it.
