Liverpool deputy mayor - tut tut

This is the problem when Starmer focuses totally on Cummings, there will be loads in the woodwork from labour too and then it gives the Tories the ability to say ' they're just as bad as us'.
Note she's stepped down 'temporarily'.
When you're trying to win the battle of piety you best be sure to be pious.

'Liverpool’s deputy mayor has temporarily stepped down after video footage emerged of a gathering in her garden during the strictest phase of the coronavirus lockdown.

The Labour councillor Lynnie Hinnigan told the Liverpool Echo that the event for her 50th birthday was not a party, and that she had stayed away from family and friends.

Video clips, which appear to have been uploaded on to Instagram on 9 May, show 12 people gathered in Hinnigan’s garden, where a large number of chairs are laid out and bunting and balloons adorn the fences.

The Labour party said she had “voluntarily and temporarily” stepped down from her duties while the event being investigated.

Current lockdown measures, which were eased on 13 May, stipulate that only two people from different households can meet in outdoor settings – such as parks – as long as they stay more than 2 metres apart.'

As far as I know she had no input in writing the rules for behaviour during the pandemic?

Yep, she should be gone for good 👎
Such a stupid irresponsible thing to do and I trust she will be dealt with appropriately, either full resignation. Or sacking.

Liverpool's deputy mayor eh? Front page news!
Next it will be a Burnley labour councillor's brothers cousin.

I don't think Starmer has been focusing on him has he? I haven't paid much attention. Starmer strikes me as someone who is not particularly interested in buying in to the tittle tattle and party politics and trying to shift focus to more relevant issues.

Not surprised at some of the biased responses but the big difference is the explanation DC gave was within the guidelines (you may doubt the veracity of it) but she blatantly flouted the guidelines to have a birthday party. No contest.

This isn't about party politics. It's about following some pretty straightforward rules and the consequences if the people who designed the rules don't follow them.

I have to chuckle when people use 'veracity'. It's as if they can't countenance the possibility that a lie has been told.

And that wasn't an 'explanation' Cummings gave on Monday night, it was a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale.

She stepped down temporarily, probably hoping that if Cummings gets away with it then there may be a chance that she may escape with a reprimand and this is understandable, she's in a good position and wants to hold onto it. However let's see how the party deal with this before we start comparing.

The problem with all these incidents is that it distracts everyone from the important issue which is do everything you can to look after yourselves, your family and your neighbours.
I can't stop reading the news, and it's affected me a lot during this lockdown. I really think it's time that the whole media started to focus on the positives and try and help people, rather than adopting the sensational headlines to grab the limelight.

What positives?

So if you didn’t have an input into writing the rules, that’s okay, is it?

We all should be following the rules, especially high profile politicians like her.

Cummings is an idiot and should have been sacked but that doesn’t excuse her.

Notwithstanding Cummings’ idiocy and his bullish!t the fact that a high profile civic leader in Liverpool (or anywhere else - and regardless of political party) did this IS newsworthy.

I suspect that if it was a Tory deputy mayor who had done this those who are minimising this would be all over it like a rash.

It is in the news, that's why you have heard about it. It's that they are much less in the public eye, hence subject to less scrutiny. One of 3 deputy mayors in one city, compared to the PM's chief advisor.

She has stepped down, showing some contrition. Shame that anyone involved in the higher profile case couldn't show similar humility.
