Live Aid 40 years on

The weirdest combo was the Thompson Twins doing the Beatles' Revolution with Madonna on backing vocals

I was in Corfu so missed it all. But I do remember seeing tabloid headlines over there a few days later. All supportive, except The Sun, which had a front page majoring on all the things that almost scuppered it - The Who had a huge row beforehand, Freddie Mercury had laryngitis and sang against doctors advice etc. Fairly typical of that rag and its malign influence on the views and mindsets of our population.

I am sure he is right and politics always takes over in these circumstances. Power struggles, corruption in Governments. Having just watched this weeks 40 yrs documentary and to be fair to Sir Bob all his intentions were honourable and his energy unrelenting in getting food out to Ethiopia and then other sub Sahara countries affected by famine. That’s all.

The rest is Governments and politicians messing it up.

If memory serves me correctly, I went to York races with the Beacon buster trip. Stopped off in Stokesley on the way home for a few slurps and vaguely remember watching Queen in one of the pubs. Ended up in Oscars then Bennetts. Goosed

I drank vodka and orange for the first, and last, time. Fell off a roof. 15 years stupid.

Got as far as Queen. Amazing
Side note: I have fallen off a roof subsequently. Neither vodka or live aid related.

I was on the dole the first half of 85 but doing some A levels part time at billingham tech. I remember that a girl on one of my courses had a ticket.
I was interrailing on the day, travelling down through france. We ended up in Port Bou on the French/ Spanish border that evening and watched the last couple of hours there in a bar.

I was there - coach from the bus station and ticket package. 19 years old and went with my brother and a mate.

Watched the first half of the concert (upto U2) on the pitch then had a seat in the stands for the second half of the day.

Main memories - it was very, very warm, sound was not great a lot of the day but the atmosphere was very special.
I did the coach and ticket package from M’bro too.
I took a box of red wine with me and my mate took a bottle of gin. That’s mostly what we used to keep ourselves hydrated (it was a really hot day) as we were right in the middle of the pitch and it was so difficult to get anywhere to get something else to drink. By the end of the afternoon I had a banging headache.

Watched it with my 1st wife in our little flat in Thornaby. I remember thinking most of it was pretty lame with some really good bits keeping me interested. Sadly I nodded off before Dylan…

Watched most of it in the TV room at boarding school in Ripon. I was in 3rd year at the time, IIRC. The bigger boys would come and go making disparaging remarks about whatever band was on because they were cool and aloof or something.

I was trying to think of his name a couple of weeks back when commenting on the Vin Garbutt thread and could I hell remember it.

Spent some boozy nights in The Tiger with Tilley. What’s Paul doing these days?
Apparently he’s not in the best physical condition these days, But his daughter’s now wearing his “best drummer in the north” hat. Maybe she was at the Moving Pictures gig.
