Live Aid 40 years on

Am I right in recalling that there was a bad accident in Middlesbrough the day before involving some who were on their way down to Wembley?

I was irritated to find the other day that the footage of Queen @ Live Aid on YouTube has been cut into "songs" and it appears that you can't watch the full set in one go. It remains one of the two greatest short sets in rock/pop history (with Prince at the Super Bowl). It's cultural vandalism I tells yerr.

I don't understand why they've done that, the songs all flow into each other with hardly a pause and often a clever segue.

Gits.

There's a decent docco on the iPlayer about this currently. Queen rightly get a lot of credit, and the UK leg in general but the USA roster was absolutely incredible!

Not many places you see Dylan, Neil Young, Beach Boys, Tom Petty, Zeppelin and Madonna on the same bill.

I was a little over 1 year old when Live Aid happened so obviously have zero recollection of it. However I am always quite fascinated by the sheer scale of it, and of course the A-List line up.

Did the country kind of come to a stand still with everyone to watch it? Were the pubs full of people watching it on the tv's and stuff?

Remember sitting down with the intention of watching the whole lot, 16 at the time and getting a bit bored after two or three hours. Came back to the evening stuff and a bit of USA show. A lot of the stuff I was keen to watch then I wouldn’t now and vice versa. Everyone seemed to watch some of it and we all remember Bob telling us to send some money!

On Sunday it will be the 40th anniversary of one of the finest music events the world has witnessed. I’m sure plenty of us have got memories of watching we could share.

It’s churlish to pick a favourite - so many wonderful performances.

One that surprised me was Sting and his performance with Branford Marsalis.

The best bit - 4 weeks later I got married.
Still loving it too

I was there - coach from the bus station and ticket package. 19 years old and went with my brother and a mate.

Watched the first half of the concert (upto U2) on the pitch then had a seat in the stands for the second half of the day.

Main memories - it was very, very warm, sound was not great a lot of the day but the atmosphere was very special.

I rigged up my huge speakers through the telly, went down the corner pub, Goya refillable 4 pint flagon of ale, had a pint and watched it there, then at home until the flagon was gone, repeat

Good for you. I was on the road to a divorce. Separated 2 years later. Then divorced soon after that.

Still with the 2nd and current wife. Still loving it too.

At about 5 in the afternoon local drumming hero Paul Tilley climbed onto my shoulders, took a good look round and announced “Oh My God!! We’ve been here for hours and no one’s gone home yet!”
I was trying to think of his name a couple of weeks back when commenting on the Vin Garbutt thread and could I hell remember it. 😜

Spent some boozy nights in The Tiger with Tilley. What’s Paul doing these days?

I had a new girlfriend. We spent the day spooning on the couch while watching it on a portable telly.

My favourite quote of the day - Keith Richards backing Dylan. They hadn't properly rehearsed and Dylan expected him and Ronnie Wood to know all the songs. At one point, Dylan turns round and goes "Hollis Brown!!!" meaning "the Ballad of..." which is on The Times They Are A Changing album.

Keef - "I thought he was talking about cough syrup..."

Daft game I occasionally play. Lennon is not dead. Beatles reform for Live Aid. They're given half an hour. What's their set? Sadly I think it would be rock'n'roll covers, Let it Be, Imagine and Yesterday.
