Lies to sell season tickets

Do you think Wilder was told we would be signing marquee signings? Don't think he would say it otherwise

Can't stand guff like this
Frank Onyeka in on loan?
Probably tried to ‘do a Sporar’ on one of these strikers we were linked with too!

His exact quote was "When we’re bringing players in there will be some big-name players in there that we hope and I believe we can attract to this football club."

It's a bit ambiguous I admit, but "we hope" makes it pretty clear there was no guarantee.

In the same way there was never a promise we would "smash the league", there was no promise to bring in marquee signings.

i dont accept that we were fed lies this closed season - it was genuine and open.
Just like over the last few years when we have come so close to that big name big money signing but we’re messed about by the selling club/agent so decided to move onto our next target, usually a cheap loan instead

It would be believable if it didn’t happen every transfer window

Do people actually buy season tickets because of the promise of marquee signings? I seriously doubt that.

They buy them because they can afford one or know they are available every Saturday (not at work etc).

I'd buy one if I still lived local no matter who came in through the door. That's because I'm a Boro fan and I could. Seems odd if you did it because someone said we were going to buy Armstrong😂

Don’t think it was an intentional attempt to mislead. Just a natural consequence of us using big fees to keep us clear of FFP breaches, whilst simultaneously making it clear to everyone else that we had money to spend (thus inflating the starting fees for deals). Genuinely think our worst transfer mistake was letting Tav go without an oven-ready replacement…

The summer transfer window stinks of not-joined-up thinking [again].
Now, we go again.
Another day.
Another manager.
Players getting used to yet another gaffa.
New one in.
Usual rubbish - "big club", "get back where we belong" "good chairman"....blah blah blah.
Boro on the merry-go-round.
Not holding my breath.(n)

If the club can fill its coffers by ripping off glory hunters, then good luck to them.

(and yes, I know I've stretched the definition of "glory" pretty far there)

We were clearly in for a few players that didn't materialize. Can't blame Wilder for that, nor can you blame him for selling our best midfielder and not replacing him - not sure it was feeding the fans lies.

There's probably something to the rumours doing the rounds but also the performances have been markedly worse since the end of the transfer window. It was like Wilder had thrown the towel in after we didn't get the players we very obviously needed and we were all waiting for the inevitable.

That's definitely part of it. The other irritating issue was the "promise " we would get the squad assembled early so we had a full pre-season to get sorted. That went well didn't it unless I missed something. I seem to remember us scrambling around in desperation at the end of the transfer window.
We have no divine right that means every player we approach signs for us but I do think there has been a lot of lies and some of this may be down to trying to be a properly run club and FFP. Would be nice if the club was s bit more open if that was the case

Whilst not being a committed Wilder fan I do think he may have been over-promised on recruitment. The statement about "they know what I want" was an indication that he was less than happy with Tav's departure and also what was being considered. It's been said over and over that allowing him to leave without any sign of a replacement was a huge miscalculation (by someone). Wilder's stubborness to alter his style when it became clear that several players weren't capable of playing it consistently wasn't going to end well.

The hastiness of his departure, leaving us without a replacement, coupled with the terseness of the club statement lead me to think there have indeed been festering problems at the club and this is not just about the results.

It's been going on for years big promises at renewal time only for a million and one reasons for them not coming through the door

The bullocks that was fed to the fans was that they were all on the same page recruitment-wise. Wilder said this in the summer and at the start of the season, now we know nothing could be further from the truth.
