I strongly suspect that the officiating team didn’t get this wrong on position per se, they just missed the flick on. Which was in truth fairly minimal as a touch although absolutely critical of course to whether there was an offside. I didn’t spot it at first viewing at full speed either, and it was only unambiguously shown on Sky by the reverse angle replay. It’s worth noting that the FreezeFrame at the top of the thread doesn’t show it definitively.

However much people dislike it for other reasons, this is the sort of human error that VAR completely eliminates. Indeed, the main gripe with VAR and offside for a lot of people is that it is too accurate. It has certainly completely eliminated from the Premier League these wrong by yards decisions.
