Lewis Wing

Firstly, this isn't an anti Lewis Wing post - I like the lad, I think he has something but has evidently stagnated a bit and a loan move makes sense.

I don't profess to know the answer to how to get him moving again, but I thought his comments to the press on signing for Rotherham might indicate some of the challenge. I know fans want to hear a new player, motivated and keen to impress but he said

"I'm a good runner, I like to get all over the pitch....I like pressing and getting in people's faces...'

Which is interesting in that if you read feedback on here on his performances you often hear 'Cant run, doesn't get stuck in and can't tackle'. Maybe that is the issue, he doesn't acknowledge his own weaknesses and areas he needs to work on. I have managed people in the past (work not football) where that can be a major challenge. I hope he can get plenty of game time down at Rotherham and rediscover his mojo as I wouldn't want to give up on him just yet.

He either doesn't acknowledge them or is deluded.

His prime thing is shooting from distance but can also take a half decent set piece, outside of that what he said is quite ridiculous.

They are indeed strange things for him to list as his strengths. Getting in people’s faces, pressing and just getting involved in the defensive side in general, are the main parts of his game that always frustrate me. Hopefully he gets lots of game time and this move does him the world of good. Best of luck to him!

Can’t believe he listed that as his strengths. These are the things he really needs to work on. He’s a poor runner and doesn’t get close enough to the opposition. Hell of a right peg on him though, I hope he never listed shooting in his weaknesses 😜

I've never questioned his work rate, but I have questions his ABCs (agility, balance, co-ordination), I don't question that he doesn't try to press, he just isn't athletic enough to do it well, or smart enough to do it at the right time. But as you go up the league, players are better at sucking those limited eager players out of position, and playing the ball around and past them. Wing is poor at keeping the team shape, pressing at the right time, he presses individually, he presses players that are under no pressure, and leaves vulnerabilities behind him.

Yeah he often puts the effort in but I don't think he's particularly intelligent without the ball. Some players seem to have a gift (likely hours on the training ground) for awareness of when to close down, stay tight, cut off the pass etc. Howson and Morsy are probably best at this in our current squad.

Clearly Wing is a more attacking player so wouldn't necessarily expect him to be as adept at this but it's clear that Warnock expects this from his midfield three.

Looks like he came off the bench to replace a CM last night for Rotherham (may have been a formational change tho?) I'd personally like to see him pushed up as a number 10 whilst there to see what he can in that position although I'm not sure he's got the close control to play that role effectively?

I dont think hes never hit any kind of form since Warnock arrived, hopefully he can rediscover it at Rotherham.

There's definitely a player in there and goalscoring midfielders aren't ten a penny

Has he never been taught to keep the shape of the team? As you can't just run and leave a massive gap for them to pass in to. Which is exactly what he does. Professional footballers should know this.

Warnock was treating him as a 10 which IMO doesn't suit him. He needs space to see the game and for his long range shooting. If you have him too far up the pitch/close to defenders he's too easily stifled.

Lewis was a breathe of fresh air when he first bounced on the scene, sweet right foot and scoring high quality goals... seemed to slow down and beome inconsistant, something changed in him

he can have a positive influence on Boro's promotion v other playoff pushing rivals... & help Rotherham to avoid the drop.. dragging 'Wayne Rooney's Derby County' ;-) into the mire....

Being athletic & able to cover around the pitch is a prerequisite of a midfield player... I would not think having played in non-League footy, he'd have any issue with the physical side of the game... he see's himself as an 8 or 10, more an 8 for me.. doesn't quite have the skills for a 10 though his shooting from distance is very good.

Of all the players I expected NW to have a positive influence on Wing was #1 so I'm surprised he's not been used as much though hope he can really progress & come back a more influential & essential first team player for us..

Wing's comments echo the Rotherham manager's, and I wonder if the lines were fed to him. Perhaps not directly.

""He's got a real energy about him, he can take set pieces and he can play in any one of those four positions in the middle of the park. The best thing for me is that he's got an inner drive, he's a winner and he's a bit of a ‘scrapper’."

For me it’s his positional awareness that’s always been his issue ( coming from non league that’s not surprising) and not looking around him for better options instead of going the Hollywood ball or top post screamer.

I wish him well though as he’s clearly got talent and an eye for goal just a little rough around the edges.
