Lewis Wing on his way back?

According to reports, hes had a torrid time since donning the blue and white stripes.
He`s not replicated the form he produced at Rotherham. Dom Howsom, Owls writer, makes this observation:

The Owls may decide to freshen up their first team squad in the New Year

Lewis Wing #26 of Sheffield Wednesday looks down at the ground.

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to add to their first team squad when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.

Yorkshire Live understands a minimum of one new centre-back and a left-back feature as part of Darren Moore's January wish list.

There is also a possibility the Owls could bolster their attacking options heading into the second half of the season. Free agent Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is currently training with the League One club as he bids to earn a permanent deal.

While the focus is on potential incomings, could there be any outgoings at Hillsborough?

Lewis Wing

Hear me out.

To say Wing has been a big disappointment since joining Wednesday would be a huge understatement. He has often flattered to deceive in the midfield engine room and failed to perform to the levels he produced while on loan at Rotherham United last term.

With Massimo Luongo and George Byers fit-again following long injury lay-offs, the Owls have an abundance of midfielders on their books. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has also stepped up to the plate and was deservedly named Wednesday's player of the month for October.

The chances are Moore will ditch the three at the back system and revert to his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation when - or if - all their injury problems clear up.

When everybody is fit, would Wing get into the best XI? And perhaps more importantly, where would he play? Is there any point in keeping Wing if he is not going to be a regular?

Something else to bear in mind is that Chris Wilder has just taken over as Middlesbrough boss. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that he might want to take a look and see what Wing has got to offer and recall him in January.

Scraping a bit there aren’t they, I highly doubt wilder would have any interest in taking a closer look at him, maybe if he’d been pulling up trees but he clearly hasn’t.

Hes still on loan.
Maybe Rotherham can pursuade him to join them?
He appears to be in limbo.

I’ve always felt a few long range strikes have helped Wing to flatter to deceive.

I think he’s shown himself not to be good enough and I don’t expect the club will be in a hurry to bring him back.

If he's struggling in League One, he's got no chance here.
It's sad to see given his bright introduction to league football, but he's struggled for a while.

Definitely see he back at Rotherham. I guess maybe Wilder would have a look at him in Jan during training for a couple of weeks.

Then ship him out on loan again if needs be. I was always suprised he never went to Rotherham. I guess it was probably finances (percentage of loan wage payed etc).

It's a shame as not many have a shot like his but I don't think he has the pace or all round game to be a star at championship level or above. Still, he's still not done badly considering where he was just a few years back!

I'm sure he'll continue to have a good career in the football league, hopefully back at Rotherham or somewhere similar.

Hes made a career out of a few long range strikes, he's a very very poor footballer and nowhere near our level, he never has been.

Very much reminiscent of Tarmo Kink (albeit a different position).

You can forgive some deficiencies if a player is capable of scoring a goal out of nothing but only to a point. Can't afford to carry a passenger and unfortunately that's what he was more often than not.

Should still be a decent player at league 1 level though. Bit surprised he's struggled so much.

Tarmo was okay, never seen a left foot like his

Wing has been overhyped since scoring a few goals when he first broke into our team. He has never produced the kind of performances to be a championship player.

I've always classed him as a League One quality player with a premier league shot.....I was wrong, he's a league two quality player with a top championship player shot. Sell him, let him have a career at a level that suits his ability, if his ability matches our ambitions then we're in big trouble

8 goals from midfield last time he played. Goals win games and he's been our only goalscoring midfielder for the past few seasons. So depending on who is playing alongside, I can accept a few anonymous displays if he is going to score.

I wouldn't be so quick to write him off.

Yes but in the anonymous games he will be letting runners go and we will more than likely be getting out played as he can’t get around the pitch.. He isn’t good enough, he’s got a great strike on him and a decent long pass but you need more than that to be a top player at this level. He should try and go back to Rotherham see if he can re ignite his form.

Wing managed 7 goals and 2 assists under Woodgate.

Saville scored 6 and assisted 4 last season whilst contributing more overall than Wing tends to.
Plenty of people were happy for Saville to go.

Crooks is already on 3 goals and 1 assist with two thirds of the season left.

If Wing's goals didn't tend to be screamers, people wouldn't be bothered.

It's more than a few anonymous displays it's a real lack of quality and capability with and without the ball. YEs he's scored a few, but he has cost us goals as well.

I wouldn't be so quick to write him off.
It's more than 4 years since his debut and he's 26, when is he going to show championship ability?

Anonymous? He's absolutely terrible.
