Let’s talk about Riley Mcgree

I think he has mentally checked out from the club. There seems to be a distinct lack of interest

Come the next international break there won't be a second thought about playing for Oz
Something is definitely wrong. On the last break, he was not that impressive for Oz either.

The problem with McGree is that his game involves drifting over to the right to provide the overloads. He does it really well.

But that leaves us exposed on the left. Hackney doesn't cover as well as we need him to do.

So to address that problem Burgzorg is playing who stays on the left more, providing more assistance to the left back. And he mostly does it quite well.

The problem is Burgzorg just doesn't do enough going forward. The Hull goal is what he should be doing, but he doesn't do it.

If we got Giles back McGree would be in the team and Giles would provide the width on the left.

But we would need a really good Left sided centre back to cover. That is probably Rav at the moment. This might be why there is talk of Clarke and Edmundson both leaving. They might be looking for a fast left footed centre back so we can adjust our style or play second half of the season.
The problem with Mcgree is Mcgree. His heart hasn't seemed in it since the start of last season and despite signing a new contract it still seams that way. He's not fit (and should be by now) and like many of the other players he can't be relied on for his injuries.

Burgzorg isn't playing for tactical reasons or his own form, he's playing because Mcgree has been completely out of form.

Also playing on our left isn't a poisoned chalice like it is at left back, his struggles aren't down to tactics, they are down to him.

I fully agree. He's looked absolutely off the pace since returning from injury.

I'm not sure if we are playing to his strengths? I feel he's another ' round peg square hole '. I don't think he suits the wide left position.

I was actually really surprised when they announced he'd signed a new deal. I was never convinced he was first choice under Carrick. Also more so due to his injury record. To throw such a big contract at someone so injury prone seemed odd. Forss would be similar.

That said it's maybe a bit harsh. The whole team is struggling. Only really Azaz / Doak and LL are in any kind of form. The fact we could lose 2 of them is even more worrying.

I think McGree sees himself as a 10 and as mentioned earlier in the thread, he tends to drift in from the left but in doing so takes up the space Azaz creates for himself. I don't think there was anyone on this board who would have wanted Burgzorg on the left rather than McGree at the start of the season but that's changed now. He looks out of sorts and creates very little.

He wanted out, nobody wanted him, he’s now sulking.
Basically this - we refused to let him go when there was interest in Germany and he hasn't been the same since.

Also he has a longterm recurring foot injury (probably one of the reasons there is no longer any interest in him from other clubs.)

when was there interest from Germany?

I love Riley think he's a proper footballer however I dont think we can afford the free wandering role he likes. Probably because defensively we are a shambles. We don't have a solid base and we don't have enough players in the team that have a defensive mindset to free him up.

If McGree has struggled for Australia and Boro that suggests the issue is to do with McGree in some way, either emotional or physical.

McGree is arguably the best footballer in the division but his fitness is always going to be an issue.

He's never going to be able to maintain full match sharpness when he's in and out of the side.

I'd be tempted to start him at Portsmouth, because getting minutes under his belt yesterday should have helped him but I do feel him coming in and out of the side has been disruptive to the team.

Something is not right, either an injury or something else. When fit and on form he is one of the best players at the club, but at the moment he is playing no where near that level.

Hasn’t looked the same since going off injured against Blackburn. Looks very lost on the pitch.

Not buying the ‘heart isn’t in it’ line, just think he’s struggling with injuries and it’s probably affecting his confidence if anything.

McGree simply isn't a LW in my opinion, he has to play in the middle or off the right hand side where he can cut in and open up more spaces
He is explosive over 5 yards but will never beat a man down the left , he is a much better footballer than Burgzorg and has more goal involvements in less game time

He also needs game time for rhythm, almost all footballers need 2-3 games to get up to speed versus training
