Johnson was appointed as manager of Hibs in May 2022. Johnson had previously spent 14 months in charge of Sunderland, arriving in December 2020 and leading the club to EFL Trophy success as the club beat Tranmere Rovers at Wembley to win the competition in March 2021.
Sunderland also qualified for the League One play-offs under Johnson that season, losing out in the semi-finals against Lincoln City. The following season he took Sunderland to the EFL Cup quarter-finals, but was sacked at the end of January with the Black Cats' promotion chances in jeopardy.
Alex Neil succeeded him and ultimately took Sunderland into the play-offs and secured promotion by beating Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley.
