Because it was true.

Rightly Remain pointed out the consequences of Brexit, which were negative. It was labelled Project Fear, like you said. It was saying bad things would happen - so it was a negative campaign. The benefits of remaining in the EU (in my opinion) were not sold to the public effectively - that would have been a positive campaign.

The Leavue campaign was very positive as they basically lied and said everything would be great. Far easier to vote for a positive if you can’t be bothered to research it (which was quite a lot of the Leave vote!).

Leave had been banging on for years so had a head start. No one needed to sell remain until the referendum was called. With hindsight Leave were in a great position to begin the campaign. Then just tell lies and the jobs a good un.
 
My apologies, I'm tired I'm sat at Málaga airport after just discovering about Storm Nelson, wondering if my flight will leave tonight and I will get to Southampton tomorrow?
