Pubs, bars and restaurants in England will be forced to close by 10pm from Thursday, Boris Johnson will announce.

The curfew will form part of new national lockdown measures being announced by the Prime Minister on Tuesday evening to tackle the surging rates of coronavirus cases, Number 10 said.

The hospitality sector for food and drink will be also restricted by law to table service only.
Downing Street confirmed the strict curbs will be announced in the PM’s live televised address at 8pm tomorrow evening, but it is unclear yet whether there are any other measures yet to be announced.
Mr Johnson will convene the Cabinet early on Tuesday ahead of a Cobra emergency committee meeting, where ministers, devolved leaders and officials will discuss the spike in infections.

It came as the UK’s four chief medical officers recommended raising the Covid alert level from 3 to 4, the second highest, indicating the “epidemic is in general circulation; transmission is high or rising exponentially”.

Aren't most places doing table service anyways? We have since we reopened and stuck to it, same with face coverings.
10pm shutting won't affect us as we stop serving food at 9pm anyways. Probably just have last food orders at 8:30pm instead.
Johnson seems to think the illness goes to sleep at 10am, whilst him and his ilk then go out shagging anything and everything.

Only 2 places we have been out to eat at are both table service and very strict on the control of customers, indeed it was something of a welcome surprise to see that 2m was the minimum distance any seated guest could be to another party not at their own table. Have to admit also that the experience was fantastic after lockdown and felt like a release of sorts from almost a whole year of isolation.

I think I might know why there is a 10pm curfew. I wonder if as RS pointed out above, the 10pm curfew will allow restaurants to continue to operate with very little loss in revenue whilst more traditional pubs will make their money from the earlier, less drunk crowd who like a beer after work, but stop those binge drinkers who go out late on a weekend.

I get people think the legislation is a bit pointless, but I wonder if it isn't, even by accident, a clever idea.

Staggering isn’t it?
Whitty and Valance come on to scare the schoite out of us telling us 50000 cases a day are on the horizon
And
Johnson (in the Telegraph????) says I’m gonna shut the pubs a bit earlier.

A reminder
It wasn’t Johnson who called the lockdown (which most now agree was too late), it was public opinion.
Guess what - over 70% in yesterday’s poll said they don’t want a lockdown.

The Nobel scientist yesterday was talking about how politics is corrupting the science.

I would guess after ten when people are drunk that social distancing goes out of the window. As always the balancing act is putting measures in place without decimating businesses completely. It certainly may help, critics will say that people will just go out one hour earlier to compensate. It’s a start at least, let’s see what the other measures are, I’m hoping for fines for people breaking the rule of six.

I still don't understand why they didn't impose this rule when they reopened the pubs.
They could also restrict the time you can spend there and also the amount of drink served.

The only downside is, will people drink at home parties instead

To be fair FC my wife and I thought it was a stupid idea then I read Randy's post and it got me thinking. It could also be the government wanting to look like they are doing something when they don't want to loose the hospitality revenue. Who knows with this lot.

Oh this is great news...... I guess that's that sorted😂
Hopefully that won’t be the only measure introduced. Let’s wait and see what else is put in olace

hopefully it’s not the only measure , let’s see what other measures are put forward.

Unfortunately most places aren't table service only and in the majority I've come across very little effort has been made by the business with regards to safe distancing.

Once the hospitality sector takes on more responsibility they'll benefit from the results. Little wonder people are giving many of them a swerve at the moment.

‘Work from home if you can’ - just announced too
It cracks me up how literally the whole announcement will be known before he even picks up the microphone.
Work from home if you can , again seems limited, I would expect a lot of people that can wfh already do, I know some had started to go back but I didn’t think it was huge numbers.

for me the measures are all well and good but I would like to see some really strict enforcement and fines - hit people in the pocket and they might start to take notice!
