Last flight of the vulcan

Used to have a poster of a Vulcan on my bedroom wall as a kid. Alongside some paintings of the Tornado GR4, Sepecat Jaguar, F-15 Strike Eagle and the MiG-21.

Yeah I went to Nelsam at Sunderland and saw it fly over. Got some awesome photos. If you haven’t read the Black Buck mission book, then you really should. The strategic planning that went into that mission was nothing short of genius

I remember the Vulcan that crashed in Co. Durham in 1971. I watched the burning plane cross the sky from the playground of my Junior School and seconds later heard the massive explosion as it crashed near Wingate.

Jeez that must have been a harrowing experience?

I was in Wingate Modern School that day and it was the morning break about 10.50am, Crashed about 1 mile away. must have been 100 yards above our heads and 200 yards to the west.....

Always used to enjoy reading air clues, especially the articles 'I learnt about flying from that'.
Was lucky enough to get a couple of articles published in it about DAC (dangerous air cargo) and did a bit of work on a civilian crash in Jersey where the load moved in flight.

Seen it at the Teesside Airshow in the 70s, a gang of us were on our way home as we cycled to the airport to watch it. It flew above us passing us near to Chrome Chemicals, it was so huge huge and made so much noise we dived into the verge terrified, looked like it was going to fall out of the sky it seemed that slow.

More 4 now.
I'm a nuclear and cold war buff so I've always been fascinated with this plane.
Did anyone go to watch the last fly past?

Yup - Teesside Airport with the family. Had seen it doing a display over Croft autodrome not long before that as well. Most amazing display I ever saw by this aircraft was at RAF Leeming in 1992 when they were still serving in the RAF - just. Standing near some Danish F15 pilots, they were ecstatic.

Some of those planes are mental. Reminds me of when they first started experimenting with wings in F1 and you saw all sorts of bizarre designs.
The prototype Vulcan flew at the 1957 air show. (I missed that one but went to five either side of it.) The prototype crashed disastrously a few weeks later.
