Lack of chemicals to enable testing

Gove said that that was the reason for lack of testing (8000 yesterday when we've been wanting to get to 10000 a day three weeks ago and 25000 a day two weeks ago). Apparently end of April is now the date for 25000 a day. Surely we knew three weeks ago we didn't have the chemicals? And how are other countries getting the chemicals to do far more? Australia had done twice the tests we had two weeks ago? Then there's China, S Korea, Italy, Germany, USA, UAE and Russia ahead of us in numbers.

The UK suppliers of chemicals that are required have said there is not shortage of chemicals, and they could supply and up production if requested by the UK government, no request has even been received.
See Robert Peston's twitter feed for details.

The time scale hadn’t changed. It was always 10000 by last week and 25000 3 weeks after that.

4 weeks from 18 March isn't the end of April.

In this instance we currently have capacity for 12000 a day but are struggling to do 8000.

Just quoting your link and comparing it with what out deputy CMO said yesterday.

It's worrying that capacity now isn't the issue. We have had the capacity to exceed 10000 tests for some time, but haven't.

I didnt realise that swabbing stations (even deserted ones) were a thing in the UK. Are they for essential workers only or those showing early symptoms?
I found: "Pictures reveal rows of empty testing stations in a car park at Chessington World of Adventures in Surrey that has been transformed into a Covid-19 test centre for NHS staff."
