Labour candidate secures Hemlington ward by-election victory

The result of the Hemlington ward by-election held on Thursday, October 24 has been announced.
Labour candidate Tom Mohan was elected to Middlesbrough Council with 422 votes, securing more than 53% of the vote.

The election was held following the death of Cllr Jeanette Walker.

The full results were:
  • Mehmoona Mirsab Ameen (Workers Party of Britain) – 47
  • Barrie Cooper (Independent) – 55
  • Christopher John Henderson (Lib Dem) – 20
  • Lewis James Melvin (Conservative) – 251
  • Thomas Peter Mohan (Labour) - 422
Three ballot papers were rejected. The 798 votes cast represented a 18.91% turnout from an electorate of 4,220.

There’s always a very poor turnout for these by-elections. Less than 800 is a joke.
Sadly it's always always the case right across the country, council by elections aren't very sexy.

Aside. Tom will be a really hardworking councillor- I would say that as he is now in my group, but I do know Tom and I've known him a good while, and he really will be good for Hemlington.

Also this now gives the ruling Labour group a working majority of 3:

Labour 25(including the mayor) opposition 22

Didn’t even know there was a by-election. Didn’t receive voting cards or any correspondence.
Really strange.
