Labour’s Tracy Brabin elected first mayor of West Yorkshire

It may prove a pyrrhic victory, however, as Labour’s win means Brabin must stand down immediately as MP for the constituency of Batley & Spen under electoral commission rules that make the police and crime responsibilities in her new role incompatible with being an MP. This will trigger another byelection this summer, with Labour sources saying 22 July has been mooted as the date for the contest.

The West Yorkshire seat has elected a Labour MP for 24 years but the party’s majority was cut to 3,525 votes at the 2019 general election, when the Tories came runner-up with 36% of the vote.

And yet Labour voters went out in their millions to vote for Labour mayors?

The Tories have been annihilated in the mayoral elections.
Just had a look.... Labour did trounce the Tories in the mayoral elections, with the conservatives taking only the Tees Valley and West Midlands. Hmm, strange !

I think the Metro mayoral elections are ran off 1st and 2nd preference, hence the Tories want to change it to FPTP.

Different dynamics. Based on ward elections they are neck and neck, albeit not a great barometer for parliamentary voting

Reading some of the newspaper commentaries Labour have been successful at eating into the Blue Wall of the south so it looks like a more complicated picture is emerging of voter behaviour, probably all to do with Brexit or Remain.

Agreed, the left vs right has definitely been muddied a little

Labour keep winning posts that really don't matter - it's like 4 million people voted for Brexit Party and they didn't get 1 MP - means nothing nationally

Andy Burnham anyone?

He's not MY mayor - he's OUR mayor (y)(y)
For the sake of balance Labour have been annihilated in the General election two years ago and in last week’s elections generally.
But all these little local council positions full of blue rinse Tory racists and busybodies are bum fluff compared to the major profile of the big mayoral positions, you can tell that by the media coverage - even the dreadful Tory PR leader Kuensbergg mentioned them as a Labour success and look at the forums Tory cheerleader above harping on about Houchen for example.

Kahn alone pulled in over 1 million votes to win his position.
