Knowing the names of the Boro backroom staff when you were a kid

I’m 40 now but can still remember the names of Boro’s backroom staff from the very early 1990s. Obviously Tommy Johnson is the big one, and Sir John Pickering, but also Mark Nile and the permed, moustachioed Ray Train.

It would also be remiss of me not to mention David Rigg, the finest groundsman these lush green isles have ever seen.

Is it just me that remembers this sort of stuff or are there others who can name Robbo’s backroom line-up or who carried the bucket and sponge for Big Jack?

I understand completely what you mean.

I went to school in Manchester and remember when I was about 9 two lads competing over who knew more about United. After going blow for blow over the reserve coaches, the scouts and the youth team it came down to them arguing over groundsmen and caretakers.

I remember everything Boro related from when I was 7 year old ('87) through to about 18 years old ('98) then gradually less so. I think priorities obviously change when you hit adulthood and all the small stuff gets less important.
It's funny you mention it though I was in the loft first thing this morning trying to find something and got distracted by old team photos from the 80s and early 90s featuring those you mention

I didn't even know the manager in the 70s and 80s. I've only really been a fan since it turned about 38ish. Even thought I had a few squeezes back in early 80s.

I think for big games like tonight you think of the whole club and all the people behind the scenes. I like it when they all get a mention. I always liked it when Aitor mentioned the tea lady a few times.

I remember Diane out of the club shop at Ayresome Park as well. And people like Simon Bolton.

I actually don’t really remember many backroom staff from after 1998, I think I remember Strachan bringing Pendrey and McAllister with him but not a great deal else. Apart from Mowbray’s staff.

Did David Nish ever work for Boro? I’m sure he was on a team photo one season.

I think David Nish wad there for at least a couple of seasons but I'm not sure what his role was. Leo was probably the highest profile staff member in recent times. He was officially brought in as keeper coach but of course we all know he was more than that

Worked in Dolland and Aitchison for a year in the late 80s.

Shep, Jack Hatfield and Frank Spraggon all came to us for their glasses.
The boss new I was a big Boro fan and always let me serve them and measure them up for glasses so we could have long chats

He was Ramsey's Assistant Manager during the 66 World Cup.
His obituary, he was with the England set up a long time.
