Kicking off at Middlesbrough Council

He wont resign - the majority of the public are behind him.

Like Johnson & Houchen they don't care what rules they break or bend etc as long as they are perceived to be doing good for the area.

Not sure what this is about, but I've got some time for Dorothy Davison, so I'm sure there is something needs looking into, at least.

They are pushing for a vote of no confidence.

Looking at that list, I think two could be criminal offences if true.

The childish presentation should not stop a proper investigation, a full list of alleged offences with details should be released and Preston afforded the right to reply, the proper channels should then undertake enquiries to see if any offence, misappropriation or breach of code of conduct has been committed and the appropriate action taken thereafter. Whatever is taking place does not reflect well on one party or the other and a proper resolution is required.

More than likely there's already investigations underway and Preston's executive know what is coming. They are long term supporters of his and are basically there to do as they are told. This will be their attempt to avoid going down with the ship.

It’s virtually impossible to remove a directly elected mayor from office. What the councillors could do though make a decision in Full Council to hold a referendum next year on abolishing the position of elected mayor. If passed, there would be no position for him to seek re-election to.

That’s how they managed to force Mallon out in the end. Unfortunately, as he announced that he wouldn’t seek re-election, the councillors didn’t follow through with the threat, so the position still exists.

Personally, I think there are too many examples around the country of ‘maverick’ mayors being elected whose administrations end up in perpetual conflict with the rest of the council. There’s no need for an elected mayor for an individual council now that we have Metro Mayors to give the area a political profile.
