Key FOB, high end cars

Didn't know at all that some of these Key fobs record data , one metric being mileage. Was watching Claimed and Shamed and a guy was trying to claim 33k insurance on his top end Audi sports coupe when he said it was stolen and crashed and written off. Police had their suspicions so did the insurance , they suspected he had crashed it but was denying everything, car had no break in signs etc witness who he crashed into could not identify him in a line up as accident happened at night on a remote road and he ran off immediately, only to come back 1 min later and remove one of the number plates. 🤔 Anyway, everything looked like they might have to pay out until they asked for his key fob which he said he had on him at all times before and after the supposed theft. Didn't take them long to find the key fob mileage data matched the odometer precisley , meaning it was in the car at the time of the crash. Love a bit of justice , on insurance fraudsters. Then I looked online and found discussions as far back as 2006 on bmw forums. o_O This has totally passed me by. I'm now looking at my Nissan key fob on the side, as if its an Alexa in disguise :(

Interesting. I took an Audi in for a service a couple of years ago. They scanned the key and then asked if this was the one I normally used. It was the spare as the other had my house keys on. I always wondered why they asked.

I thought this was going to be about thieves scanning fobs & then stealing the cars.
Same hear. Only as its current with me lol.

I've just had a mare with my insurance company. I own a MK8 Fiesta ST (midlife crisis). My policy was up and now they are very twitchy that I have no extra security as keyless.

Genuinely weren't going to renew my policy despite being 45 and 26 years no claims. They have now bumped my excess up to £600 until I add 'additional' approved security. So booked in for a Thatcham approved viper immobiliser at £250 fitted😔

the Ford ST models are cat nip for the thieves, even just the body kits: wake up to a stripped of spoilers & bonnet car...

* insurance quote sounded like it was back in the 80's & 90's....

I think it's the cars ecu that records the data, rather than the key, with the former being able to recognise which key was used to operate the car for any particular journey.

I found it ridiculous. They had insured it for 8 months. Genuinely at the point of saying they wouldn't do it.

I've never claimed anything in over 20 years. Whoppers 😂
