Just Home and trying to catch up

I was visiting family in Cambridge yesterday and are trying to catch up on how we played. I've just watched the Sky highlights and they only showed the Swansea goal and the two Boro goals and the save from Jones.

Does anyone fancy giving me a realistic account of what went on?

Just saw their chance in the first half when the lad side foots it past the post. We seem to be getting set up regularly for the player running from deep for the pass across the 18 yard line. Hull scored from a similar position midweek.

It's going to occur frequently when the ball doesn't stick up top / there's some defensive responsibility from ' the three ' not occurring, and ' the two ' are not the most athletic.

The problem is worse than the sum of the parts with our injuries.
Coburn
Mcgree
O'Brien
Hackney
Smith
In a starting 11 make that type of chance much less likely

Coburn
Coburn is essentially for the ‘Cameron Archer’ striker we didn’t sign in the summer. Decent return and we have ELL one goal behind CA
Sam Greenwood doing well with a better return than Aaron Ramsey
Our superb replacement for Alex Mowett.. who missed out most of the season through injury.
Big miss.. but it’s only been a few games. Hopes he’s back soon.
Dijksteel is back tho..

Replacement for Cameron Archer
and cover for Lenihan and Smith and we’re cooking on gas! Good job we’ve got three loan spots left too!

we will continue to ship these types of goal as that is where we are weakest individually. Dijksteel and Engel/Bangura aren't convincing, add in lack of cover from the midfield and it is an area that the opposition will always try and exploit.

Not sure what Barlaser was doing for that effort. The ball goes past, no more than a foot in front of him and he makes no effort to intercept it. Similarly, I have no idea what Fry is doing for their goal. Hes in complete no-mans land and there's no need for him to be sucked towards the play on our right as there is enough cover there. Having said the VDB should have recognised that Fry had lost his marbles and made more of an effort to close the space that Fry had vacated.

I don't think any of the defenders cover themselves in glory on the goal. VDB is caught in no man's land and doesn't know whether to stick or twist and Fry looks like he's auditioning for the next Full Monty.

I think it was one of the worst performances I have seen under MC. We looked like an insipid mid table champo side. The injuries are really starting to bite now. If we had Mcgree, forss, Hackney and O'brien available we would be so much better.

We somehow won though so that's the main thing, as long as we are no more than 9 points off the playoffs by end of Jan then I'd back us to chase it down, injuries depending.

Defensively Engel/Bangura, any worse than Giles. We shipped goals last year too.

I feel the full backs are getting found wanting due to the lack of quality in front of them. Last season, teams were reluctant to commit too much going forward against us due to the threats we had in midfield and upfront. We could score from anywhere and catch teams on the break. We just don't have that threat this season.

We're missing Lenihan organising behind them too.

Great point, also a poster earlier in this thread makes reference to the "three" and "two" not pressing/covering etc and its spot on. Lots of reasons why we are being targeted in certain ways, and often not as simple as blaming the one individual

Not really sure Fry is at fault. He's taken up a decent position. VDB is caught out of position and let his man get the wrong side of him.
Jones and Dijk between them need to put more pressure on the ball as it's being crossed. Dijk stands right off him and Jones sort of half ar$ed closes down.

Bangura is also the wrong side of his man by the way and would have also had an easy finish if the cross had gone longer.

We're great at analysing the chances that goals are scored from whilst tending to ignore the mistakes made where a chance is missed through poor finishing.

The one where Walsh missed the sitter with side foot was Fry and Barlaser but I didn't dare point it out in case everyone jumped down my throat again.

But Fry gets himself in a bad position and let's Lowe get the wrong side of him. Then doesn't really recover giving Lowe plenty of time to get his head up and find the pass.

Barlaser doesn't pick up Walsh when he should and finds himself the wrong side of him. By the time he realises and tries to track the run its too late.
Very lucky to get away with that one.

I'm not just talking about the Swansea game, RvdB allowed the Hull striker to get behind him, bounced of Dieng and Delap's chests I think before rolling out. They happen every game but there's no criticism if it's not a goal.
