Juninhooooooo

You live in Sao Paulo Marque ?
My youngest son lives in Niteroi on the coast, we go there in June. His in laws support Famenco except his Mother in Law who follows Botofogo. Some of the family follow Santos too.

The Niterói close to Rio? Hence the Flamengo link ... whose supporters came out of the woodwork this year lol

I'm in São Paulo around 6 months a year (in 2/3 month blocks). I try for two summers - so here between September and April (ish). Xmas back in London; then May to September there. I have a start up here in Brasil. It's good fun but, as they say, Brasil is not for beginners.

I first came in my corporate days 8 years ago, now more frequently in the last 3.

I really like Brasil, and I really like São Paulo. As your son may say "um pouco perigoso", but avoidable I think. I have only been to Rio itself once. It's the only place here that I have seen gringos!!

I have finally learned to speak passable Portuguese which makes things easier. As you know English only doesn't get you too far.

It's Carnival right now which as you know is taken to extremes. My local borough here has clamped down this year ... "only" 5 days and one extra weekend, no booze sales on the street after 2 am, blocos only on the 2 main roads .... as you know Brasileiros don't take kindly to rules/control etc.

June in Rio sounds like the best time climate wise. It's a chilly 15 to 20C here at that time. Woolly hats and boots - seriously!

Aproveitem!!

He's just moved back and has a beach front apartment there. He married a Brazilian girl 4 years ago and has been out there and back over 7 years. He work's here and the USA a lot and all over the world tbh. He was at a place about 1.5 hours away from Rio the name escapes me now , but they chose Niteroi as there is family there and his Mother in Law and sister in Law bought houses there and have Hair Salon too.

It's Carnival and way too hot there for me, June is good.

Yes winter there is mid to high 20s; enough. São Paulo is further south and up on a plain (800m I think); a bit nippy in July when that wind comes up from Cape Horn.

Anyway, I'm a Paulistano. We think Cariocas are all lazy buggers.

as far as I can see hair salons, nail bars and pharmacies account for 72% of the Brasilian economy 😁

You a feijoada fan? I have to get a doctor's note to eat it.

Didn't like it and found black beans with pork unidentified not for me. My favourite we now do at home now and then Salpicao.
some of the finger food is OK and sweet stuff, they eat a lot of ham and cheese. They couldn't get over the Supermarkets here or the off licence part

They seem to have more bank holidays than working days, the daughter in laws name with ours now attached us now 33 letters long

They like to party like no others, he has a outside rooftop bar and pool.
They do to further West in land about 200 miles to see other family and have a gigantic get together there and sometimes in Portugal.

The food should actually better. Although on average is OK. Even a bog standard bar does acceptable food.

If you don't eat rice and beans, do they let you through immigration? Once a month for feijoada - the beef, rib and pork, yes; the knuckle sized pork scratching and fist of fat? go easy; the pigs ear and tongue? give us a bag of crisps.

In São Paulo there are around 1.5M people of Japanese decent. So the sushi is marvilhoso. Probably the best outside of Japan. You need to like raw fish of course.

8M "Italians" here in São Paulo ... but they didn't bring the best chefs with them.

Of course the meat is great. But oddly the 2 best steak places locally are an Argentine and a Uruguay restaurant.

on the supermarket front, my friends are appalled with UK supermarkets. Everything looks good but nothing tastes of anything. Which is true compared to here. I always find it noticeable here that even the hippest, tattoo-ed Paulistano is burrowing through the pile of fruit/vegetable to find the one he wants.

After 3 years I am now allowed to choose a manga .... sometimes. But not yet a papaya or banana. um dia ...

oh calma, calma. o trabalho pode esperar ..

yep, every saint, state, federal holiday is recognised ... basically Christmas to Carnival is a holiday. In fairness it is summer too.

But, without sounding patronising, great people and an stunningly beautiful country.

Very sad too, the corruption and poverty is incredible. A rich country with a lot of poor people.

Sorry for the spelling in using a remote to spell things out.

The strangest one they celebrate is Saint George's day the English patron saint...which is really odd when you see the flags etc, plus a day off. Does the Sao Paulo region celebrate it?

what to say ... São Jorge wasn't English. Don't the Catalans celebrate it too. I could Google but some of the club's and cities here have the cross of St George on their badges. The English were a bit late to the St George table. Sorry but he's not yours.

Yes I think there are other countries that use the saint and the colours, and wasn't he a Turk? It just seemed odd when he sent a photo of them partying, he told them although he the English patron saint we don't celebrate it.
He likes the heat and the way of life, he spends his time in his rooftop hot tub, bar or the beach.I
Strange thing was I bought a Flamengo top in Florida in 98 and used it to train at football when I played and ran teams.

Strange it was who my sons wife followed.

A joy to watch that little fella play, it was just a shame we didn’t have the defence to match our talented midfielders an forwards - hard to believe it’s almost a quarter century back since he signed for us !
