Jorgen Strand Larsen

I mentioned to my lad on Saturday we could do with some bigger/more powerful players.

Other than Crooks we're not particularly a big team anywhere else. Even Lenihan & Steffen aren't big by current standards.
I’m glad you mentioned your last sentence, I got jumped on here last week when I said that I didn’t think Lenihan looked that big. I was quickly quoted height sizes!
I was at York and stood next to him as he alighted the team coach, and a lad close by commented similar thoughts about his demeanour. Btw, I’m not knocking him, I think his leadership and defending skills are certainly what we need, but a beanpole he is not, however tall his 6’2” in height may be.

Of course you have to take the standard of the league into account when scouting players, but that doesn't mean none of them are worth that sort of money.

I know Alves is cited as an example (because he ultimately flopped for us) but you could easily name plenty of top class footballers who came from Dutch football and thrived over here.

It's a case of trying to assess whether the qualities the player has that makes them a success in the Dutch league (or any other that isn't top 2 English divisions) are likely to be transferable or not. More of a gamble, but potentially higher reward as similar players in prem/championship are going to be at least twice as costly.

That is disappointing if Armstrong is definitely staying at Saints?? FFS

Was never a guarantee he would come here if he was allowed to leave, but that is who I was hoping would be one of the extra few coming in we need .. badly. The word was he wanted to come here to play games and as it is home for him more or less, it was close to being done.

If he isn't coming then that is that then.

Anyway, I just posted in another thread about players I have never heard of being linked, OP, this one is another ... his stats look decent at a glance?? .. will have to give his compilations a look if there is any on Youtube or owt :D
The moment Graeme Bailey broke it, you knew it wouldn’t happen

Alves is subject to opinion, Personally if you look back at the quality shown of all of Alves's Middlesbrough goals he was no mug and it juat didnt work out in the end here for him!
I still say alves was poor managed and dropping him after his goal run was just bizarre. He did score goals.

But if this is true and I don’t doubt it then it confirms one thing at least that we DO have money to spend and we are prepared to spend it.

Correct Southgate destroyed his confidence by playing him alone up front which he just couldn’t do
I'm not sure that is what hurt his confidence, it was more that he lost a creativity in midfield when Rochemback left and wasn't replaced.

He had 2 months to get up to speed, then he finished the first season with 6 goals in 6 games. We sold Rochemback and he got 4 goals in the next 31 league appearances. I think the idea was to play him off Mido, but then Mido injured his hip, then had a strop.

Anyway back to this Larsen guy. I like my CFs to have good footwork, quick feet and the ability to get out of a tight spot is key to CF play, if you can dribble with quick footwork you can also get your shot away quickly and get a foot in front of a defender to poke it into the net. Doesn't matter what league you are currently playing in, if you can do that you've got something. To score goals at 20 or 21 in any of the top 10 leagues is impressive, he's got 23 goals in just 54 starts and a goal every 116 minutes, at that age if he was playing in league one he would be red hot property. Fee adds a bigger element of risk, of course, but the most important thing is his ability levels, and capability to step up. If he were to get 15 in the championship as a 22 year old that value would double, we've seen that with Gyokeres. He's well ahead of where Gyokeres was a year ago in his career.

It was 6 goals in 11 games Ive just checked.

No chance, i'd love it, looks spot on, but Muniz, Hoppe, Larsen and Forss?
Would be excellent but we can only play 2 so who would come here, and not play, who would be spunk money on and not play? it's evident we need to improve on Watmore and Coburn isnt ready yet but i just think we'll get Muniz and Hoppe and maybe a young lad ala Balogun or a L1 cheapo who will be 4th choice.

I remember he was rested wasn’t he after his goal glut but cant find the stats
Somebody said that earlier, but his goal glut was the last 6 games of the season, everyone was rested at that point :ROFLMAO:

If they mean the following season where he scored 4 goals in 4 games, well 2 were against Barrow, 1 was against one of the worst prem sides, and the other against a poor championship team. He then came off the bench in the next 2 league matches. Maybe he had a fitness issue, maybe scoring against Barrow didn't really hold much stock with Southgate. Personally I think people wanted a stick to beat southgate with, so exaggerated to fit an agenda. I'm not saying I would ever pick Marlon King over Alves, personally, but there may have been other circumstances.

well they're all young, hungry and eager, Larsen is the only one of those 4 who has ever held a first team shirt on merit. The other 3 would be taking a step up by starting 10-20 matches a season

Imagine signing one who can actually do the job, not four who possibly, might maybe do at some time in the future.
I don't get this buy 4 "prospects" because one of them is "bound to" come off sometime.
A lot of faith being put in Kieran Scott's judgement ,but he is not the bloke picking the side to get us up.

There are no guarnetees, plenty thought we were signign one that can when we spent 15m on Britt. That was a flop.

Every signing is a risk, good players fail at the wrong clubs.

What I like about the rumoured signings is that we're not going down a tried and failed policy. We are utilising proper scouting to sign players before they make it big, the Brentford approach. It's much more sustainable.
