I guess its no real big deal in the scheme of things - what goes down also goes up.

Promotion for the Boro next season - whenever next season might be.

It’ll bounce back, as you yourself said too few people actually care that he lies, that he’s incompetent, that he only cares about his career and the power he can grab.
It’s upsetting.

'Upsetting' is a good description.
I'm not angry - I know what behaviours Johnson, Sunak, Gove et al are capable of and they are merely living up to expectations.
Most voters know that too and are happy to vote them into power.
I find it really really sad.

I’m astonished that people on other threads are seemingly alarmed about the fact that politicians ( now even advisors ) are insincere self serving liars .

Naturally it’s a crushing disappointment in life but so is the fact your hair falls out and you can’t play footy anymore .

Life’s guarantees you can’t change and the best thing to do is carry on best you can as it’ll never change !

I wrote a letter to Rishi Sunak last night as he is my local MP. I am awaiting a response and will post it on here when he or one of his team do so.
I have never written to an MP before so not sure how it works. I have had an automated response by email telling me they have received the letter so now it's a waiting game I guess?

I believe it is not the fact that they lied that is "astonishing" it is the arrogance that he should not even consider resigning, that he does not have to apologise for anything he did, that he expects us to believe a narrative that is so obviously written to marry up with indisputable facts or even that parts of that narrative explicitly demonstrate that he broke the law (driving while visually impaired) or are so blatantly lies ("ended up in Barnard Castle on my wife's birthday, ooops") and that the Prime Minister cannot see how offensive that is to people who have made incredibly hard sacrifices in order to comply with the instructions written by Cummings himself that is ASTONISHING.

No it is not time to move on, it is time to go.

Randy I have just emailed my MP Nadine Dorries. I did post the email in another thread, and, like you, if I get a response I will upload that too.

I've written to mine too. Lincoln is swing seat and the Tory incumbent has just got back in.

Sunak, of course, has declared his hand again today.
The fact he has worked with Cummings for many years and he is indebted to the PM for his recent rise to fame is a huge factor here.

Should a miracle occur and someone in the senior cabinet break ranks I doubt it’ll be Sunak. Remember he stole Javids job because he agreed to have Cummings people advise him rather than his own. Still I’d be interested to hear the response from his office.

I am with Borobarmy here. Politicians lie, they always have, always will. The problem here seems to be that the Tories have been in power for so long now that people think they invented it. Everyone knows that politicians do what they have to do to get elected. Their job once elected is to get re-elected. They work for their party, not the people that voted for them.

Something else that seems to have exacerbated things in recent times is that journalists seem to think it is their job to trip politicians up and that is it. They are permanently looking for the next scandal. They expect a sacking every time one of them gets "caught" and they want to be the ones that caught them. Whether or not these politicians are doing a good job is irrelevant (I'm not saying Cummins is although his employers seem to be happy enough with him). As well as journalists is the devotion of a weird army of people to go hunting through ancient stories for little tidbits they can use as "evidence" of a politicians lies.

This isn't just politicians though. Anyone in the public eye has everything they've ever written or said open to scrutiny and there is an army of people online who think they are doing good by "exposing" it. Some of it is good but a lot of it is pathetic straw-clutching and fame-seeking.

The point I was making Muttley was I’m not surprised at what they did , but the fact people don’t expect them to do it .

It’s common practise like Boromike says . Of course It’s not right but we’re pi##ing in the wind thinking it’ll change .

I applaud your messages to your MPs but as I expect you know , you’re wasting your time . I don’t have enough fingers on one hand to pick noble MPs (ever).

It just exemplifies their arrogance that when ’caught’ they fail to fall on their sword knowing we’re toothless. Boromike has a point when he says the pack suffocating him fosters following from some of the public and whet the appetite for more razzle dazzle .

They’re not doing it for us . Nobody ever does

Exactly I wrote to him.

Do you think that is a recent trend?

Profumo?

FFS when idiots just shrug and say "they've always done it" that is how democracy dies. Yes, if they get caught lying I expect them to resign. I don't mean a little trivial transgression but something like this where he has basically lied through his teeth and broken rules that he himself drew up it is indefensible. And that is not based on which colour of rosette they wear it is something I expect. The fact that they think that they don't is not down to journalists but to people like you who just shrug and let them get on with it.

Thanks for your balanced calm view Muttley I don’t quite blame myself for it if you don’t mind . Oh and good luck with changing the world . 😤

No it's not a recent trend but it is different now. These days it is all about going viral. Getting hits on a tweet seems to trump everything else. In the past you had to already be a relatively successful journalist working for one of the established media to get noticed. The goal was to get promoted. Now it is just to get likes and retweets. The quality of journalism has devolved to clickbait.

And yes, I agree that when a politician does something seriously wrong then they should lose their job but Cummins isn't a politician anyway, he's an advisor and is weirdly the bogeyman of the left/remain but secondly what he did wasn't actually serious. He should have held his hands up and apologised but because of the situation we are in where any admission of guilt is proof that someone should be lynched then people involved with politics will never admit they are wrong.

I fully agree that it is hypocritical and elitist and I hate the idea of do as I say, not as I do but even so if this had been any other advisor it would barely have been mentioned. If he had got a parking fine or a speeding ticket would you be expecting him to be sacked? Of course not. That is the level of "crime" he has committed. I hate defending him because I don't like him at all but his breaking the rule has no bearing on his job as an advisor. He was given the job because his employer thinks he's good at it. It's not an elected position and he isn't some evil puppetmaster, he's just someone who makes decisions that people on the opposite side of the debate don't like.
