Johnson to resign shortly it would seem

He could stay as PM but hand all duties to his deputy. The title without having to do the work is all he's ever wanted anyway.

It doesn't matter if you have the support of your party or not, the leader of a party has no constitutional power. The post of Prime Minister has the constitutional power and if Johnson is still PM he wields it.

Personally I think the Tories will have to force him to resign as PM. I suspect they will be looking for someone to take over but this isn't simple as it may affect the new PM's leadership prospects.

Johnson is obviously hamstrung with regards to getting bills etc voted through but the position of PM has many powers that don't need party / parliamentary approval. Johnson has shown this time and time again throughout his tenure.

He won't be calling a GE but he still will have great power. He would be in charge of National Security. Imagine if a Nuclear Weapon was used in Ukraine - Johnson would have the final say on how we respond. With the Lebedev revelations yesterday this is worrying.

NOTE - Just announced that a full Cabinet has been appointed and will be announced soon. It seems like he might be staying for a bit until there is a new leader appointed.

Just reporting on LBC than a spokesman for Johnson has said he will continue to work on a cabinet reshuffle and to fill the vacancies that have come up. Doesn't sound like a man with no power.

Positions are beginning to be filled.

Johnson has appointed a full Cabinet. Further positions will be filled today. - BBC News

This is turning into some bizarre nightmare.. a resigning Prime Minister, having spent the first couple of hours writing his resignation speech then spends the rest of the morning appointing new Government Ministers. Someone needs to give him some crayons to play with for a while and let the grown ups sort things out... oh hang on.

Apparently he's rewriting some of his statement.

As someone on Twitter drily observed, he's probably thinking, "let's just take out the word resign, see how it looks".
He is remaining as lame duck PM for a further 3months to apparently say he was PM longer than Theresa May.
