Johnson at pains to point out it is Lockdown

Not the vaccine that has led to the dramatic decline in deaths and cases.
Seems an odd/stupid/scientifically proven (delete as applicable) thing to say - predictable oddness/stupidity is a feature of his though so I will go with one of those.

Makes a change from his unbridled optimism that marked our emergence from previous lockdowns. Looks like he has learned a lesson, unfortunately it took the deaths of 130,000 people for him to do so.

Let's hope vaccinations will prevent serious illness and death as they expect. As looking at pubs in London last night the cases are inevitably going to rocket over the next few weeks.

It is both. The lockdown set the downward trend, the vaccine amplifies it.

Add to that list that we've already killed 130k of the most vulnerable, 100k of which are more than would be typically expected to die and there's another load that survived it.

It all adds up, but even the worst fires will eventually run out of fuel, this one is being starved in many, many ways, thankfully:
More are vaccinated
Maintained distancing (since Crimbo at least)
Less susceptible people (lots of deaths already)
More have had it
Coming into warmer months/ seasonality
More testing
Better tracing (cringe)
Better treatment
Healthcare no longer overwhelmed
No "hot spots"
Government finally learning some lessons
Government seemingly listening to science more

I think he is trying to justify all the lost lives, businesses, jobs, the ruining of a whole generation's education and future before the inevitable inquest which will hopefully result in him, Hancock and SAGE being jailed for life.

Lockdowns will be required when if you don’t have a suitable test track system in place. That’s why the who say is shouldn’t be the PRIMARY method

The government and public health England have already given their excuse: they hadn't realised the prevalence of asymptomatic cases and their transmissibility.

I don't think that washes for the first wave and certainty not the second.

He really isn't. He wants to keep emergency powers. He can only really do that if we are all convinced there will be a killer 3rd wave

What if there is a "killer 3rd wave" and it is allowed to run unchecked like the 2nd wave was for too long?

The important thing is that these "Emergency Powers" are removed once we are properly out of this pandemic. I wouldn't trust Johnson to tell me the colour of my lawn without checking but let's just stick to the path laid out. I think it is a reasonably cautious set of steps.

Once that is done the reckoning must come with the performance of this Government properly judged against its actions from the beginning of the pandemic to its end. Judgement on money wasted on PPE, lives lost due to inaction and complacency, a hugely costly and ineffective track and trace program, economic damage done through ill judged and timed lockdowns. Everything that has been done, where the money has gone, cronyism, deceit and corruption. All laid out and blame apportioned.

The lesson must be, never trust a Tory.
