This will have the same impact on football clubs who have footballers out of contract. Ayala’s contract ends at the end of May and could move after that date. It is alright the league saying they are going to extend the length of contracts but everyone will have to agree.

Taking from the BBC:

Jonny May's move from Leicester to Gloucester highlights the "confusion and ambiguity" of the current situation regarding player contracts, according to a top sports lawyer.

Gloucester have signed May from 1 July and expect him to be available to play immediately.

However, the current season is likely to be extended well past that date.

Lawyer Richard Cramer says preventing May from playing would be a "restraint of trade".

No games have been played in the Premiership since 8 March after the season was suspended because of the coronavirus outbreak. Leicester and Gloucester are still due to meet this season, in round 17.

Cramer told BBC Sport: "This has caught Premiership Rugby out a little bit. The big debate is what Premiership Rugby do now do in terms of registration.

"They have got a bit of a headache now because I don't think the rules provide for this scenario - and to stop a player playing and plying his trade would be a restraint of trade."
 
They shouldn’t really have a field day.
The message boards might though.
The contract expires. There is nothing legally, preventing the players moving on as far as I can tell.

If clubs want to keep the players on they will need to agree an extension with the player.
 
They can probably prevent him from playing for a different side until the present season is concluded if they have the same rules as football

That seems easy enough if they have rules in place to do that and hopefully they do. If they don’t, they could find themselves in a situation they are preventing a player plying his trade and he his would be seen as a restraint of trade.
 
I’m not sure that’s the case.
These contracts have a fixed period - it isn’t like handing your notice in then being put on gardening leave.
A contract expires - you are free to move wherever.
I’m sure some legal eagles will help

I have just been reading the following: -

A leading sports lawyer says out-of-contract players in England can ignore FIFA proposals and leave their clubs at the end of June, even if the season has not resumed.

Nick De Marco QC, who has represented sports governing bodies, players, clubs and agents since 2002, says players will be entitled to "walk away" from clubs if their contracts expire on June 30.
 
I think, on that basis the season is (rightfully anyway IMO) over

The bit you missed off though was that it might not be in their interest to do that - it will very much be down to the individual.

I think the point he was trying to make is that (in the UK certainly) employment law will override anything FIFA try and impose - it will get messy
