Jeff Hendrick

How long is Bola out for? We could do with another LWB. Taylor is decent defensively but you can see how lop-sided we are at the moment. All our attacks go through Jones. Would be nice to have someone for the opposition to worry about on the left. We're just not a threat on that side of the pitch.

It's something that Warnock identified in the summer and something that Wilder has been addressing since he arrived.

Wasn't it mentioned when we signed Boyd-Munce he'd played a game or two under Karanka at LWB?

Hendrick - Geordie mates are having a whip round for the taxi to get him down here asap. To say they don't rate him would be a little bit of an understatement.
But, Championship level in a happy/stable squad.......🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I'd expect to see McGree playing there to start with

The inside story of Jeff Hendrick's career and what he will bring to Newcastle United's midfield

Jeff Hendrick is in line to make his Newcastle United bow on Saturday when the Magpies take on Barnsley in a behind closed doors friendly at the club's Benton training base.

The 28-year-old midfielder arrived at Newcastle on a free transfer on Monday as he penned a four-year deal at the club and he adds another dimension to an already well-stocked United midfield.

Having spent four seasons at Burnley, Hendrick's Premier League and international experience, as well as his energy and bite in midfield, appealed to Magpies boss Steve Bruce.

Bruce privately held concerns when he first took over as manager last summer that Newcastle lacked the legs in midfield to play the way he wanted. Hendrick's arrival offers the Magpies coach a player who loves running with the ball from deep and is known to be hard-working.

It was something that struck Derbyshire Live reporter Steve Nicholson when he first saw Hendrick play for Derby's under-18 side as a 16-year-old.

"I knew Jeff from 16 onwards but with young players you are never sure because they accelerate at different times," he told Chronicle Live.

"I watched every kick he made for Derby and what was clear early on with Jeff was that he was a strong player. He was a strong competitor and a strong runner.

"When you step up into the Premier League you have to have physical strength as well as the ability to play. You have got to be a good athlete and I think we are seeing that with a lot of sides in the Premier League.

"Jeff has gone on to prove himself as a very strong performer and he has played over 350 games. There is a lot more to come from Jeff Hendrick."

The Dubliner broke into Derby's first team as a 20-year-old in 2011. Nicholson remembers thinking Hendrick 'looked at home' in senior football from his very first start for the Rams and within two seasons he was part of a Derby midfield that was 'the envy of the Championship'.

"In 2013/14, Derby reached the Championship play-off final, and in that season Derby had the best midfield in the division," he added.

"They were the envy of the Championship when it came to midfielders and the set-up was basically a 4-3-3 under Nigel Clough then Steve McClaren.

"They had Jon Eustace or George Thorne sitting as a holding midfielder and then they had combination of two from three of Craig Bryson, Jeff Hendrick and Will Hughes.

"Bryson and Hendrick, particularly, the energy they had off the ball, the strong running, the willingness to support attacks and run beyond Chris Martin, the central striker, was fantastic. It worked an absolute treat.

"Jeff was an important part of that."

Derby failed to win promotion under McClaren but Hendrick continued to go from strength to strength.

Kevin Phillips, who was a first team coach at Pride Park between 2015 and 2017, recently said Hendrick gave an 'eight out of 10 performance' week in, week out, during their time working together.

After a successful EURO 2016 campaign with Ireland, Premier League clubs were circling and his subsequent move to Burnley came as no surprise to his former Derby team-mate Johnny Russell.

"Always," Russell, who now plays for MLS side Sporting Kansas City, replied when asked by Chronicle Live whether it was obvious Hendrick was going to become a Premier League player.

"We wished it could have been at Derby but we couldn't take that final step but watching him in training, knowing what he was like in training with his work-rate and what he wanted from his career, he was always destined to play at the top and has done for some time now.

"He has got a great amount of caps for a relatively young guy for Ireland and obviously this is a big move for him as well playing for a team like Newcastle.

"I am delighted he has shown how good he is when playing at the top and he deserves to be there."

Hendrick made 139 appearances for the Clarets and was part of Sean Dyche's side that qualified for Europa League football in 2017/18.

His versatility to play in a number of different roles across the midfield made him an invaluable asset to Dyche and it is also what appealed to Bruce.

Hendrick has played in a variety of positions for Burnley, including on the right and in the No 10 role, but he could yet slot into Newcastle's two-man midfield or give Bruce the option of playing with a 4-3-3.

"He has got everything," Russell added. "At Burnley he played a lot of different roles.

"He is a very fit guy, he is technically very good and he is aggressive. He can score goals, he can assist and he is never going to let you down on and off the pitch."

He quickly made an impression on his team-mates at Turf Moor as well.

"He is a really nice guy," Djurgardens midfielder Fredrik Ulvestad, who played alongside Hendrick at Burnley, told Chronicle Live.

"He is a good player and is versatile. He can score goals and can also defend.

"He was influential and we had quite a good group of players and he fit right in with the others."

Dyche very publicly lamented not being able to keep hold of Hendrick beyond his four year deal as he was losing a Premier League ready player, for free, who was already well versed in the dynamics of his Burnley side.

And Burnley's failure to tie down Hendrick beyond the end of last season left former England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson perplexed.

"I’m surprised that Burnley let his contract run down," Hendrick's former Clarets team-mate told Football Insider. "He’s been a very good servant for them.

"Sean Dyche’s recruitment is very stringent. You have to be a certain type of character to fit into what he wants.

“There’s no bad eggs, as such, in that dressing room at B
urnley, and Jeff certainly isn’t one. He’ll fit in very well at Newcastle.”

Apparently he's in Jeddah with the rest of the Geordie squad so not expecting anything to happen imminently.

top player at championship level and perfect for a wilder team, sitting deeper and breaking up, then driving forward, or pushing higher up and starting the press

We do seem over stocked in CM, or at least we do now after Payero came back into the reckoning yesterday.

Always liked his game, seemed full of running with good ability & can score a goal.. good addition to the squad..
