Jamie Patterson

I don’t think it’s all about whether a player is good enough or not.

Managers are also looking at whether the player will fit in with how they want to play. As well as other things I.e attitude, injury record, alternative options, how much competition we already have in the squad in that area etc and wages of course.

I’d imagine Warnock knew the player was good enough for us and would get a move to another big championship club but maybe felt he wasn’t suited to how he wanted to play.

This isn’t praise or criticism of Warnock, just my opinion.

I imagine it was every bit his wage demands and the fact we were stacked with CMs. Also he was pretty poor in the pre season friendlies (I didn't see many saying 'sign him').

That said offers as much as Payero and about 5mil cheaper.

Watched him in the pre season against Plymouth and he was terrible. Perhaps we just weren't the right fit for him?

Easy to say in hindsight when he's scored 4 goals and got 3 assists for Swansea now?

However, I watched him in 2 of our pre-season games, which would have been seen as his audition in my opinion, and he was absolutely rubbish.

Audition schmaudition. Our recruitment team should have already known enough about him. He's been around for long enough.

It's all hindsight. Before these last few games where I agree, we've missed out...
Imagine the fans on this board when our recruitment team signed Jamie Paterson instead of Sporar, after all the hype. You'd be calling for Warnock's head before the season even started.

Also been injury prone and cr*p for a year or so on lone at Derby and final season at Bristol City.

It's not as simplistic as saying 'they should know'. We would have never signed Watmore based on injury recored and goals/assists.

This is definitely a hindsite thing. I hardly saw anyone on here in July saying 'sign this lad'. I imagine 90% were 'meh'.

I thought we should have signed him and I was baffled that we chose not to.

You can't read much in to friendly performances.

No I wouldn't.
I think at the time most people thought he might be a decent signing, certainly worth a punt for free.
Also, I can't remember the timescales but I don't think I'd heard of Sporar when Paterson played his games.
More probable is if we signed him Jones wouldn't have got his chance. Or we wouldn't have signed Hernandez or maybe Olusanya.
I would just find it strange if a decision was made purely on the strength of his performance in those two games.

Not sure which threads you were reading, but do a quick search for "Paterson" in the top bar...

"Phew." "missed a bullet there". "Bang average". "Not good enough for us". "Jamie Paterson is terrible player".

If you didn't agree, fair enough, but it's very easy to say that you thought he'd be a decent signing now, AFTER he's scored 4 goals in the last 4-5 games.

Not sure what that proves. Two threads started AFTER he signed for Swansea. Both of which include comments for and against him. And referring to people previously wanting to sign him.

Anyway, my original point was the fact that I didn't think the games were an 'audition' on the pitch. The club should have already known enough about his abilities as a player, I imagine they will have been assessing other things including attitude, wage demands, etc.

At the time I was personally disappointed we didn't sign him but trusted Warnock's judgment. Now I'm not so sure about Warnock's judgement.

Evidently, according to the Swansea manager, we offered him a contract. Swansea then got in touch and he ended up there. More forwards are not our priority at the moment.

I watched those two friendlies too, and on the evidence we saw, he was a no go.

Put it down to fitness, or whatever you like, but the simple fact was, he was terrible and on those performances, he wasn't worth a place on the bench, let alone a first 11 shirt.
