Jack Grealish

Was gutted he never got to play the full 90 minutes. I like Mount but for me he isn't a no 10. Grealish looked much better suited to the role tonight. It's his movement off the ball which really impresses me.

I do have my worries about whether he and Kane can gel though. There was a moment in the 1st half when he was running at their defence and I wanted Kane to make a run in behind but instead he drifted out to the left. I feel Grealish would link up better with DCL but we know Kane is obviously a much better striker. It's a frustrating one really.

I’m hoping the fact Grealish was hooked early is a decent indication he’s in the plans for the first KO game. He is much better than Mount offensively, that’s not even up for debate.
It also sounds like Mount may miss the KO game because of the covid protocols anyways, which may make Southgate’s decision a lot easier.

yeah. I do like mount but if we’re playing 2 holding midfielders, as we have been, then
the 3rd midfielder needs to be someone that really makes things happen and for me, Grealish is the better option.

well that’s assuming the formation stays the same against the better sides...

I largely agree, I think mount presses better than grealish which I think against the better teams is going to be important. I felt grealish wasn't pressing last night and allowed czech republic a fair amount of time at the back to build attacks, against france germany et al I don't think we can afford to give that kind of time and space. Particularly as we have clearly gone down the route of keeping it tight and progressing on the back of being solid rather than attacking.

I know fans don't have the full details and never can, but unless an injury is the case why even have Sancho in the squad. I'm sure I heard Gary Linekar state last night that German media have stated England must have outstanding players if Sancho hasn't played any minutes yet.
Clearly we're planning to unleash him.... on Germany! :)

Good stuff

I do feel he’s been built up massively by the media and the public and if he doesn’t look like a superstar or England don’t look vastly improved with him on, some are going to be underwhelmed.

I think he’s a very good player though and hope he has a great game. We know the public and media like to knock folk down after a build up.

I mean , Harry Kane is suddenly being spoken about like he’s rubbish because he hasn’t scored in 2 games. I wonder if the French are wanting to drop Benzema and Mbappe because they haven’t scored either.

Mount Henderson and Grealish would be my midfield

Problem with having Mount alongside Henderson is it would restrict Henderson, as he would have to play as a sitter. As we saw last night, having Phillips alongside Henderson meant Henderson had the freedom to get forward and support the attacks and I thought he did well, particularly when he made those overlapping runs down the right side. He also nearly set Kane up for a goal with a lovely chipped pass.

Good point but the only way I could see Grealish, Foden, Saka Sterling and Mount in the team

Yeah, I guess it boils down to which player would give us more in an attacking sense........Henderson playing box-to-box, or Mount as a playmaker. I'd prefer Phillips in the sitting role ahead of Henderson because of his passing ability to be honest.

Thought saka was superb though, as I said above very good player and totally underrated.

yeah he was excellent

in my opinion, his performance should make it difficult for him to be dropped...although I’m sure Foden will be back in ahead of him.

Even if he doesn’t start, I think he made a big enough impact to be a first choice sub to come on and make a real difference.

looks a nightmare to play against.

also, One thing I’ve noticed about even some of the top teams in the competition is defensively they don’t look that great when teams really go at them, and Saka does that...

Because the game now seems to have so much emphasis on possession, which can often lead to teams passing the ball sideways for minutes on end, So when you get players like Grealish and Saka running at teams, it’s almost like they’re not used to anymore and find it difficult to deal with. I think that’s why players like Mbappe have so much success, I think most modern defences have become accustomed to slower buildups from teams attacking them, So they struggle once they come up against players that can put them on their heels.

Me too!! Foden and Sterling on the wings!

Sterling and Foden could swap wings through the game. Foden and Grealish could also swap through the game aswell, keep the opposition on their toes.

Henderson was awful last night when he came on. England were poor in the second half.
Everything Henderson does is backwards or sideways and he doesn't complete forward passes.

Grealish has to play.

Henderson the box to box midfielder who has never scored for England?

He only scored 4 goals for Liverpool during their title winning season, only 1 goal the season before but he was still such an important cog in the wheel.

He brings drive, energy, leadership, a great range of passing and his movement off the ball is excellent. You're always going to be able to move the ball about quicker when you have a player like Henderson who is always looking to make runs off the ball, rather than a player who just stands showing for the ball.

We most certainly didn't move the ball about quicker in the second half. Not remotely.
