Jack Butland for £1m - Wow

Palace have got a bargain there, the buy of the window - hes probably still the best keeper in the Championship and only 27 despite a loss of some form.

It also says to me Stoke are not in a great financial position.

20 months ago they wanted £20m for him and he was in the England squad.

Not sure about Stoke's financial position, but his contract being up next summer might have something to do with the modest fee.

Agree with gravy, he’s been awful for a few years now, another Joe hart and finished in his mid twenties, he’s gone to palace to be back up.

I guess in hindsight they should have cashed in 3 years ago. He was Englands No3.

He has been woeful but look at how many decent players Stoke have brought in and been poor. He maybe just needs a change and also play with better players.

You'd say even with 1-2 poor years he's a bargain at 1mil. I know he comes with wages but you get feck all for 1mil these days.

Stoke's accounts probably don't look great, even by Championship standards. They are owned by the Coates family, who also own Bet365, however. They have very deep pockets indeed. Most EFL clubs are loss-making businesses, relying on subsidy from owners. Many of these owners are faced with increasing demands from clubs at the same time as their core businesses are squeezed. Their willingness and ability to subsidise football clubs is greatly reduced. I think this is what Steve Gibson was alluding too. I've no idea how covid plus Brexit will affect Bulkhaul, but there will be plenty of football club owners who can no longer afford to pick up the football bill.

He was in the England squad in the Summer of 2018 - he was poor last season and dropped by Stoke, but he had 6 very good years up to 2018 and at 27 still could have another 10 years in him. As said by another poster what do you get nowadays for £1m - a decent division 2 keeper at the same age? does a player drop from around £20m to £1m in 2 years?

It smells of desperation to get something and get his wages off the books.

Their fans reckon he was on £40k weekly wages so losing him frees up money regarding FFP.
Apparently Birmingham were due 25% of any fee above the price they sold him to stoke for (£3.5m).
Unlucky Aitor, Brum get nowt.

Just like their match against Wednesday today.

This situation not a million miles away from ours with Assombolonga.
He will be on £40k per week and has been pretty awful the last two years.
If we had ANYBODY else to take his place who is to say he might not have moved on for a million.

For an expensive striker with (fading) pedigree it did seem odd to see absolutely nobody linked with him in the transfer window, at any price.

Like most transfers its not just about the transfer fee; he's obviously out of contract soon, plus he'll be on big wages, which will most likely have driven the fee down.

Its strange how some players seem to peak early and then fade away,

I’d be very surprised if he was “only” on £40k per week, as you say he was an England international for an established premier league team and will have at least had one contract renewal since he signed from brum

That 40k might of been after a relegation pay cut. Either way he looks finished already. Seems to of happened to a fair few English goalkeepers over the last 10-15 years that drop off in their mid to late twenties after looking really good in their teens / early twenties. Hart, Butland, Kirkland, Wright, Forster, Walker, stockdale, Lewis our own Jason Steele even Paul Robinson to a certain extent.

Butland is another pro who lost heart and I personally feel it is down to earning too much money at such a young age. There is no hunger in the game, just mercenaries.
