Jacinda Ardern - Resigns

We clearly agree re Johnson.
Earthquakes are part of life sadly in NZ - especially the tragic Christchurch; and one utter nutter acting alone in a mosque is hardly terrorist central (despicable as it undoubtedly was)
It is one thing looking good throwing borrowed money around during a pandemic and then actually having to finance that when you have publicly de-prioritised growth like she has.
Ardern's tests will be what she does when she really has problems and when the electorate is not distracted from the economy and actually remembers what she did rather than said.

The new leader of the opposition will test her, and it will be an interesting 67 days to the election.
In fact, pre covid it was anybody's guess who would be PM, she certainly wasn't a shoe in.
She has been hamstrung as part of a coalition, NZfirst have put the brakes on quite a few of the policies that labour wanted to introduce. Lest see if they get the chance in September.

The Opposition currently have no leader going into an election in 50 days time. They are in disarray aren't they?

My brother who lives in NZ has pretty much said that the opposition have made no impact. Muller was hopeless and has now gone. Appreciate that NZ voters can be conservative in their voting habits but these aren't normal times.

Judith Collins has just been made leader, she will appeal to the National party base, and will use half truths, and suggestion to get a message across.
She is extremely polarising, and will split the party down the middle if she stay for too long, but it may now be much closer than it was going to be

Being new to the Board exploring past threads via the search button and interested reading this one
Of course NZ is much smaller in population and doesnt have the density of households that certain countries have but it does have a focussed policy that has now achieved 100 days covid free. Interesting article about hos they pursues this policy here.

I was reading about Vietnam eho have also followed a similar policy with regards to the agressive dealing with it and they achieved virtually no cases. Recently they were devestated to learn that htere were a few deaths from an outbreak at a hospital and have shut the area down immediately.

It’s one of the great shakes that we only compare ourselves with either western or English speaking nations.
If the general public were aware of how nations like Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam and quite a few eastern Asian nations dealt with the virus they’d be even angrier with our weak and slow response.

Vietnam has a population of 94 million. Their aggressive policy quickly shutting down infection areas was an example of firm action.

New Zealand has gone 101 days with no community transmission. No social distancing or masks as things have returned to normal. Tourism will have been hit, but presumably home vacations will have taken some slack. Tourism % of GDP is 5.8%, about half of the UKs. But it is about 20% of their foreign currency earnings.

Exactly. Sadly for us, and luckily for the government, the general public don't care about events that happen in none english speaking countries so our woeful response in comparison will be largely ignored. This makes me really sad. They can get away with killing us because so many people are ignorant of how well other nations are doing.

TBF... NZ is an island far away from other populations.. it's a 4 hour flight from Aus... if they couldn't shut their borders & keep the infection at bay / stopped... no one could.

If ever there was a country ideally located & sized to be covid free / resistant it is NZ..

Yes, she's & they have done well, & that is to be applauded.. however stopping a person to person viral infection on such a remote island is not rocket science.... just good planning & prompt action..

But surely New Zealand is heavily dependent on imports to feed itself and all the other requirements. You cannot ever be totally, truly isolated.

Vietnam isn't, and it's coronavirus response has been excellent

Ardern has just put Auckland into full lockdown after the discovery of a cluster of 4 cases. Bang no messing about.

My statement still stands: NZ is pretty much the ideal location & size to best avert the virus..

Vietnam, excellent initial steps & carried that on - though you could imagine the outcry here to the measures it took..

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/may/01/testing-vietnam-contained-coronavirus

https://covid19.who.int/region/wpro/country/vn - 13 deaths, 841 cases.
Yeah it’s wierd isn’t it, there would be a massive outcry over thousands of lives being saved. It’s a troubling insult little country we live in isn’t it?
