Jacinda Ardern - Resigns

My statement still stands: NZ is pretty much the ideal location & size to best avert the virus..

Vietnam, excellent initial steps & carried that on - though you could imagine the outcry here to the measures it took..

https://covid19.who.int/region/wpro/country/vn - 13 deaths, 841 cases.
It was the height of the holiday (tourist) season there when it broke out in NZ. It was the least ideal time.

:-D - holiday time has little to do with it - being at the R'se end of the world & a 4 hour flight from Aus, the nearest big county - really helped it - in addition to the prompt action by JA..

If you don't think being a remote - though significant - island with very easily controlled borders, helped or made it an 'ideal' candidate to withstand a person to person viral pandemic... then Carry on up the Wairau..

Any Island could have shut its borders bob , it's all down to leadership and what will the public wear, which is basically convincing the public why what they are doing is necessary. You alo have to be prepared for what that entails, our tourism industry and hospo has taken a hammering, and there will be more to come.
We've just entered level 2, with Auckland at level 3, for an initial 3 days . I suspect that this will be longer, at least for 2 weeks
Just shows you, with all of the precautions that we have taken, you can still get community transition. This is one nasty, surviving virus.

My family whatsapp group has gone into meltdown over a 3 day lockdown and 4 cases. They are expecting a run on bog roll today.

Already started in Auckland, but what they are saying is its more that people just don't want to go out and shop again, rather than panic buying

Not holiday time, tourist time. They get more tourists than we do per head of population.

Yeah it’s wierd isn’t it, there would be a massive outcry over thousands of lives being saved. It’s a troubling insult little country we live in isn’t it?

The thing it’s hard to quantify lives saved. We have undoubtedly saved lives by locking down in some form all be it too late it’s hard to quantify

if you cant quantify it, make it tangible the public won’t accept - strict lockdown in this country unless you implement strict law and massive fines. Even if you did that the public would be up in arms about it

Gaz, that is nonsense, at the time of lockdown the death toll was doubling every 4 days. The maths is simple, my 9 year old daughter can do it.

The big queues at supermarkets in NZ on tv this morning suggests panic buying has returned down there.
Yes a little, but as I say it seems to be more that people dont want to go shopping as opposed to worrying that supermarkets will run out of stock. I went shopping in Richmond today, and other than lots of hand sanatiser and people observing the 2m rule it was fine.

It's not at all, it's comparing us to a country like vietnam, in which we are considerably more deadly. Be an amount that is unfunny and would suggest the peoples responsible are guilty of collective manslaughter.

Close the channel tunnel and we have the same border to control. We're also an island.

Ah you’re in the South Island. I used to live in Nelson for a while. According to my Aucklander sister in law there is certainly panic buying going on. There is also a shortage of masks in her vicinity. I have to smile in some ways at this panic. They were getting a bit smug about the Covid zero situation but this South Auckland family have caused some disturbance! Especially as one travelled to Rotorua. Feeling symptoms!

The problem is this country has huge swathes of gullible conspiracy theorists. For example some idiot posted an article to my local facebook community page. The article was from a website that multiple fact checker sites said was a spreader of fake news. The article itself claimed that the medical profession had proven that masks don't work. This then got into a debate where about 10% of people said they're exempt and won't wear one (not can't), another 30-40% said they will not wear one full stop, and started spreading more nonsense articles and calling people sheep for wearing them. These clowns reading, believing and spreading fake news, are putting my children at risk. This is what we are up against, the stupid have been awakened through the use of fake news by various political actors in the last 5 years, now dodgy internet sites are their go to. Remember this is the country that weaponised a hatred of science and logic, and experts just a few short years ago, and now it's come home to roost.

Not the best idea in the world. Think a lot of people here became very Blase, and we were all told, time and again, its a matter r of when not if. Next few days will certainly be interesting though. We live out in the Moutere, between Richmond and Motueka

How many lives have Vietnam saved

Blasé possibly but certainly my fam have felt relatively secure up to now. Moutere - know it - paid a few visit to the Himmelsfeld vineyard in my time.
