Live racing is totally different .
Big meetings like Ascot , Cheltenham , Aintree , York etc tend to be booze fests and crowded .
I would highly recommend a day out at smaller venues e.g Sedgefield , Hexham and similar .
Hexham is small track mostly attended by racing folk and the location is fantastic with an elevated position and fantastic views of the Northumberland countryside .
I enjoy a day there even though I'm not horsey or a gambler .

Not been to the races for a long time.
Redcar was a good day out in the past.
I wouldn't want to go now... I'm not into this 'Ladies Day' thing they've been doing, which seems to end up in prosecco fuelled chav boxing contests.

I've made a conscious decision that i'll only back horses in flat racing. I don't really bet that often on horses, maybe once every couple of years if I got a feeling for it, but it makes me feel better.

I've never been to the horses either though I used to put a bet on once a year for a few years and that was the national. Literally just a fiver each way on a randomly selected horse. Won once in about 5 years and gave up when I won, it's not just Yorkshiremen who are tight with their money :D

Very wise Wee Gord .
Me too .Tight as Rambos headband .
Bookies have 5 windows to pay in , only one to pay out .

I use to go to York regular for the Magnet Gold Cup and it was more about the company than the event.

We also started going to the St Leger at Doncaster and that was on a different level. We would all go suited and booted and the night out after the event was brilliant. Doncaster is a great place to go for a drink.

One year at the Leger my mate backed all the jockeys with red caps and ended up with 5 winners. 😁

Went to Redcar once in my teens as my mate's father was the course doctor. I was bored stiff.

For me its never been about the gambling but I love to watch the horses run. My mum worked in a bookies for a while and she told me some horror stories of men losing their entire wages. Blokes coming in, opening their wage packet and within an hour the lot was gone.

I could you go home and tell the wife she's not getting her house keeping money.

I had a membership for Yorkshire cricket and you got a day for each Yorkshire racecourse in the posher part for free. Always enjoyed days at Redcar, Thirsk and Catterick which are easy to get to on public transport from Teesside. Ripon is much harder due to transport links but is a lovely course.

Providing you dont go mad on booze or bets I have always had an enjoyable day at the nags.

I went to Redcar Races once with my week's pay in my pocket when I was 18. I was utterly jubilant when I backed a winner and then utterly distraught when I found I'd had my pocket picked and lost all my wages. Never been racing since.

Love going to Thirsk in August and then having a few drinks in the centre afterwards, can't remember what the place is called but lovely little pub with a very low ceiling and a jukebox, gets rammed like.

Redcar is crap in comparison.

Been to the races once
Beeline trip to Doncaster Match 1967. Advertised as races and match.
Being only 16 I was bored stiff at the races. The match was magic though.
Rovers 0. Boro 4 Arthur Horsefield hat trick . The start of the run in to promotion that year.

I was a massive racing fan when I had more time and ammo and have been to loads of courses many multiple times. In fact my username is named after a racehorse...
Redcar
Sedgefield
Catterick
Ripon
Thirsk
Beverley
Chester
Doncaster
York
Kempton Park
Windsor
Newbury
Salisbury
Ascot
Goodwood

The only time I went to the races was when our company held corporate events. York Ebor meeting, Ripon and Sedgefield. Bored with the racing, would place a token bet or two and never won. Spent most of the time making sure the clients were well fed and watered. A good social occasion.
