Ivan Toney

If Ollie Watkins is that good why didnt someone in the Prem sign him from Exeter for £1.8m? If Maupay is that good why didnt anyone sign him for £1.6m when Brentford did?
Yes understand that but the way people are banging on about Toney - £30m player and all that - hes not there yet as a player merely because he scored two against Coventry. Im sure he can be and wish we could have afforded him last season. Clearly has potential but am sick of hearing about the Brentford recruitment love in on here.

he has got 5 in 7 league games, so not a bad start, but as pointed out not an unknown (or a gem :) ) but fair play Brentford they do seem to have a good system in the Transfer market, sure at least we got Dijksteel for a decent price and he could turn out to be a great buy (never going to use the word Gem again)

5 in total maybe? Brentford haven't played 7 league games.

Wasn't Toney a Newcastle player who let him go on a free to Peterborough?

He's looked good in the last 18 months, but as said £10m was out of our budget, unless we sold Fletcher or Britt on a similar deal.

I think he got injured yesterday and was taken off in the 64th minute. He has scored 5 goals so far which is impressive.

They've not unearthed a gem as in finding an unknown, but they have found a gem of a deal, I think that's what a lot of people mean.

£5m plus addons for him is absolutely next to zero risk, there's no way his value goes to zero, but a high chance it rockets up.
It's similar to Josh Maja leaving Sunderland, for 1.5m or whatever it was, when he was 19 or 20. There was just no way on earth that you wouldn't get a return on that 1.5m, as he had scored 15 in 24.

Then compare those two to, us paying 6.5m for Fletcher, who hadn't scored a single goal for West Ham, and had only scored 5 in 20 in League 1 (in 2015 when he was 20). We got him in 2017, when he was 22 and no further proven, and had gone backwards, if anything.

So compare those three, all stats from League 1:
Maja, 1.5m, 19, 0.6 goals per game (his most recent season)
Fletcher, 6.5m, 22, 0.25 goals per game (two season earlier)
Toney, 5m, 24, 0.75 goals per game (but 0.36 the season before that, 0.5 before that, 0.4 before that)

Maja probably had the most potential there (now scoring for Bordeaux), and Toney the most proven (and proving again this year), Fletcher didn't even look to have great potential and had no scoring stats to back it up either, it's bizarre.

I'm not even slagging Fletcher off mind, as I don't think he's bad at all (and showing better signs this year), I just don't think the return was likely to cover that outlay, it couldn't have ever made sense unless we thought he could be an instant success (which we didn't, as we didn't play him).

Toney is a bit older, but had been scoring goals in league 1 for many teams, since 16/17 then last year took off, it really is a good deal.

If a young lad tares it up in League 1 then buy them up, even more if they've done it for more than 2 years, there's no risk.

Don't read it then.

Brentford's scouting is up there with the very best. Some of their recent transfer dealings have to be admired.

Andre Gray, Maupay, Watkins....and I wouldn't be surprised to see the next big sale to be Toney in a year or two.....and those are just their strikers.

Not including some of the big money sales of their defenders/midfielders.

Fair play to them as well, they have a system and it's working.

Yes yes. So we have been told 400 times. Their recruitment team are wonderful, Andre Gray, Neil Maupay, Ollie Watkins etc. We get it. Our recruitment team are Shyte and could only dream of emulating the marvellous Bees.

Gary Gill couldn’t lace Lee Dykes’ boots.

Ref Fees

When we bought Fletcher everyone said we had over paid - we seemed very impatient that Summer and just decided to pay what was required straight away without haggling etc. I think he is a £3.5m striker, possibly a bit more if he can improve with age. He was very inexperienced when he came 35 games played. It should have been £3m with some add ons

Wasn't Maja's fee set by his contract? He went to a big French club who would paying at least top end Championship wages £30k/week?

I am sure there are some flops at Brentford which we don't here about - although there % success is very good. They could also benefit from the London effect, came and play for us, live in the capital and be seen by Premier League scouts from Chelsea/Arsenal/Spurs/West Ham/Palace/Fulham who are our neighbours.

Why didn't a Premier club buy Watkins instead of Brentford?
Don’t know Ctc. Were people bandying £25m player around at the time of his purchase? Look can’t argue with Brentford’s recruitment set up. It’s clearly first class and I’m kind of tired of being constantly reminded of it every time Brentford’s new bargain buy scores a goal. That’s my problem and will take Marvanelli’s good advice and not read the comments anymore.

It seems to me that a key individual for Brentford’s scouting is a guy called Brian McFarlane who is based out in France. He spotted Maupay at Brest, Benrahma at Nice, Mbeumo and Jeanvier as well. Think they have done brilliantly to secure his great talent spotting and many clubs must be envious.

The same people were bandying £20m around for Dale Fry. They're fruitloops.

He's going well, so far, and good luck to the guy.
He certainly gets the service that a striker needs in order to score goals, that helps.
Don't therefore underestimate the contribution of those around him to his goals tally.

I suppose his goals mean that Brentford are within touching distance of the mighty Boro.

if we could swap Toney for one our strikers we would be sorted and walk this league, but sure we will have to do it the hard way
