Oh dear.

I dont think any of the breaches involved games he played in did they?

But I understand why the ban on betting has to include all games and whilst I may have a little sympathy for him - assuming his motivation for the bets was the obvious one - they all know the rules, so you do it at your own risk.

Surely it cant be that hard to get a pal to set up an account and use that if you want a flutter?

Betting in general.

If you work in football in England, you're banned from betting on football.
Wow, I didn't know that.

I knew they couldn't bet on their own games (fair enough obviously), but not being able to bet on others seems a bit daft, as long as they're not in some kind of syndicate with others etc. Although I suppose it's done to discourage that.

Don't see why they can bet on other sports and not football mind, it's not like players don't know other sportsmen.

Football is a very interconnected world.

If they were allowed to bet on matches, plenty of unscrupulous players and managers would fix bets.

I suppose that's worse, as it's deceptive/ deliberate fluting of the rules which you fully know about.

I wonder if he's been doing it off his own back and not realised, or thought it wasn't that big a deal if he wasn't doing anything dodgy. Ignorance isn't an excuse mind, not at that level.

Yeah, of course it is, but if he's been betting on things which he's got no links to, then is that bad?

It goes back to 2017, he was 21 then, and possibly betting on things he had little link to, not much time to build up connections etc.

Maybe he's just got or had a problem, but nothing sinister about it. I'm sure the full details will come out.

That's what I was thinking. Couldn't you just get a pal to set up an account or go down to the bookies for you, with the promise of splitting the winnings with them.

I'd imagine it would be easy enough to get away with it if you were clever about it.

I used to work in a betting shop and often took bets from coaches and players. To be honest I don't ever remember being told/advised not to.

He was an established League One player in 2017, and he was betting whilst a Premier League player in January.

I don't think there'll be anything sinister about it at all, he'll probably just enjoy gambling, but it's still a clear and repeated breach of the rules.

If being was allowed on matches that the punter had no involvement in then there would still be a risk of people conspiring to fix matches, or using their influence to get others to do so.

I get the blanket ban, I think it's unavoidable.

Barton bet for 1200 times and was given a ban for 18 months.. so 3 months?

However.. they’re talking about the possibility of a lifetime ban!!
