Ivan Toney

No wonder he wasn't in the England squad then, I wonder if he'll be paid whilst he's banned.

For me it sends the wrong message to pick him - isnt representing your country meant to be about more than just performances? Isnt it meant to be about character, professionalism and being a role model? Some role model Toney is!

He's already admitted it!

I'm guessing he means that there's been no judgement or punishment given yet, so they're entitled to pick him still.

Kieran Trippier has made virtually every single squad in recent years, and he was banned after he actually told people he was getting transferred to Atletico Madrid and to put money on it, so it's not like it's setting a new precedent.

I don't really agree with him getting picked before the punishment is served, personally.

But he's already playing for Brentford, and is involved in the majority of their goals on their charge for a European place, so it's not like he's expected to be in exile till it's resolved.

The reason that football authorities now take this so seriously is the match-fixing scandal in the 60’s where 10 players over the top four divisions were jailed for throwing matches for betting syndicates. This included 3 internationals who played for Sheffield Wednesday (Layne, Swan and Kay) who agreed to throw their game against Ipswich. Ipswich won 2-0 and ironically Swan was the Man of the Match!
They were banned from football for life, but later changed to 7 years.

They were banned for life, later reduced to seven years, but those Sheff Wed guys - and about seven others - went to jail. Layne, Swan and Kay were part of the England set up. Swan was tipped as a 1966 World Cup player.

If they are still alive they must look at Ivan Toney and wonder why someone earning about £100k per week would get involved in betting. They were earning about £40 per week.
