His followers seem hell bent on bringing on the rapture...

Theyre saying things like "Give me freedom or death!", using the crisis as a second ammendment issue and attacking people Like Bill Gates who is funding research in to a vaccine and theyre all wearing MAGA hats...

Worrying stuff from 'Merica...

THeres a 50/50 split in politics over there, are they heading towards some kinda civil war (I guess theyve always been on the edge of it with such divisive politics)...

Americans seem to constantly think they are in a struggle against their own government for freedom. Anything that takes away freedom is bad. They care far more about protecting their "rights" and it is a very selfish attitude. They don't seem to consider that when their rights have negative impacts on other people's rights that they are doing exactly what they are fighting against. For such a large country with a very diverse population they are extremely insular.

The difference with Trump is that now the leader of the government is telling them that the government is bad as if he's taking the system down from the inside.

Obviously not all Americans are like this but more than enough for it to be an issue. Even most of the ones that seem sensible think are heavily influenced by guns, religion and are anti-communism and very pro-capitalism. It is a very different culture to the UK.
 
Yeah you have to take into consideration the massive cultural differences. I had a number of American colleagues, most of them Democrats too, who were anti gun control and had a mistrust of their government regardless of which rosette.

Although their rights are protected in a written constitution, you have to understand that the mass majority of Americans hate being told what to do and there is always the feeling that politicians and government are out to take what rights they do have away. You can call that selfish, you may even feel sympathetic towards it, but comparing it with UK politics and culture is pointless.

Trump is trying to have both sides of it, on the one hand calling out state level politicians for their decisions and directing appealing to the citizens as the anti establishment figure (even though he is the establishment) and on the other side of the coin, he's trying to distance himself from any responsibility and calling it the 'invisible enemy' to give him more room to manoeuvre from any criticism.

For what it's worth, this pandemic and what Trump does with China will define the next election. He may not even have to do too much to win the next election. The Democrats shot themselves in the foot with going with Biden, he may talk the talk when it comes to China but his family dealings with China and his record with China when he was VP works against him. I can't see anything other than another 4 years of Trump. Only Trump can stop Trump winning a second term, something he is very capable of doing.

In fact classic populism - a strategic approach that frames politics as a battle between the virtuous, “ordinary” masses and a nefarious or corrupt elite.
 
I was reading a piece the other day that reckoned that Trump was showing signs of dementia. Now I wouldn't wish that horrible disease on anyone, even Trump, but some of the points raised seemd accurate. The worrying conclusion was that the Republican Party (a little like our own Cons) are so focussed on retaining "power" that they are willing to "manage" Trump's "problems" to do so. Scary?

I note also that someone was sueing Fox News for deliberate mis-information in the lead up to the Virus outbreak in the US. I know that this is very much a US "thing" but...

Who knows.

Are you sure that wasn't Biden? I don't think I've ever heard the man finish a complete sentence. He does look really weak, and I'm not just talking politically.
