A nifty little timer.
Absolutely this. All of it. The scientists seem to have either explained it to him in words he understands, or he still doesn't understand but they have got away with it. I hate to say it, but if it was Thatcher, a trained scientist, who was in charge, we would be in a much better position. Now I'm off for a shower and a lie down.I dont want to get sucked into any board rivalries that we appear to be seeing.
From a scientific perspective from someone who has managed risk in a variety of data driven industries. We are seeing a more text book way forward the the popularist political way we saw last year.
In a scientific way you make an action and look for the effect on the underlying population, in the way that the virus travels you need an observation period of 4 weeks to collect and observe the data, and a week to analyse and find a way forward. This differs from the two week dash we observed last year. This should give a clearer way forward, but may require tweaks to the opening up process if necessary.
The dates given are for guidance only, so that some of us in business have some sort of target to aim for, but none of it is written in stone. It has been destructive to business operations opening up one month to shut down the next in areas such as mine where the virus is very low.
The method used suggests to me that the scientists have had the upper hand to manage this properly this time, rather than the situation last year, where some were showing their frustrations in private. If successful it gives the politicians a chance to say that they did follow scientific advice - eventually.
We should be happy that we now have a route out for this country, with some indication of possible timescales if the data backs up the way forward.
It is also very difficult to have a series of data driven targets that should be aimed for. As most of us know data can be manipulated to whatever extent we want it to be. Also some of the models have a high margin of error. Therefore it is better to use a range of statistics and view this to see where the trends are taking us, allowing us to use levers at are disposal to drive down the effects of the virus.
Also remember that this is used to manage the virus in the UK, I hear reports of people rushing to book holidays abroad. Surely you would want to see how the other countries are managing their own situation first.
Having a sandwich and a flask of coffee with a mate on the Moors will be normal enough for me. It won't take much for things to feel a lot better.Expect we will see some sort of normality over the summer, doubt it will be close to life as normal but its as good as we can expect for now. Allowing foreign holidays into countries with low vaccination levels seems crazy though, especially if other mutations are forming, keeping the boarders closed as long as possible is surely the only way we will avoid being back in lockdown in the winter again
Its ridiculous we cant do that now to be honest.Having a sandwich and a flask of coffee with a mate on the Moors will be normal enough for me. It won't take much for things to feel a lot better.
I think I can walk locally and do that from 8 March, but to go and meet someone on the Moors can't happen till 29 March. Its ridiculous we cant do that now to be honest.
Exactly, I honestly think there are a group of posters that will jump on Chris's posts, if he wished everyone a good morning, some posters would react to it, what do you mean by that, talk about bringing a little sunshine in to people lives which then turns in to a monsoonI can't believe how serious this thread got after Chris's opening comment.
It was simply a bit of excitement and I reckon he started the thread hoping to get everyone talking about their summer plans etc.
Such a shame reading through it.
There's some right miseries on here.
You're wrong.Exactly, I honestly think there are a group of posters that will jump on Chris's posts, if he wished everyone a good morning, some posters would react to it, what do you mean by that, talk about bringing a little sunshine in to people lives which then turns in to a monsoon

That's the way I saw it as well. All you appeared to do was correct the thread by pointing out what was said yesterday. I'm not sure why people have misunderstood this. Unless they are doing it deliberately to be contrary or argumentative.I'm sorry, but I'm not having this.
As I said earlier, the dates given were the earliest possible and we shouldn't be building people's hopes up that it'll be earlier, particularly for those who are having mental health issues, as failing to meet those expectations could be far more detrimental than anyone, like myself, trying to reign in over enthusiastic interpretations of plain English.
Chris actually posted this:
"We all know what he has given out is a worst case scenario in reality and I for one hope that it is revised the other way."
Sorry if I think that sort of post is out of order because of what I said above.
Seeing light at the end of the tunnel is good news indeed and I'll celebrate it when it comes, but given what we've all lived through this past year and how many times our hopes have been dashed by factors beyond our control then I'm not going to get my hopes up based on wishful thinking.
Anyway, I'm done with this now as I'd hate to be accused of being some sort of cyber bully just because I'm a pragmatist.
