Is Andy Murray the greatest British sportsman

Apart from when he was ranked no.1 in the world for the best part of a year.

Who are they then?

The first three are sports that 95 percent of the world isn't interested in, even calling them sports is pushing it.
Mcllory is a good shout though.
It doesn’t matter how many people are interested, they are great sports people, and even if you don’t think they are sports they are.

As I said not mechanically assisted… car bike boat etc.
Take his racquet off him then, see how he gets on?

To your arbitrary set of rules which seem nonsensical to me he'd be up there.

If we're ruling out other solo sports where we have world champions, anything that uses anything mechanical or 'assisted' to deliberately rule out your mate Lewis and any team sports then it's a narrow field.

How on earth you think he's 'dominated' though I have no idea, he's competed at the top of his sport and overcome some injuries to come back and have another go, without ever being considered the best, or probably even top top three in his era.

I do quite like him as a character though.

I do think they are great sports/games. I particularly love Snooker, but surely criteria for how impressive and inspiring the sportsman is should be based on how much worldwide competition there is to get to the top of that sport.

Depends whether you view success as medals or world records I suppose.

Has Mo Farah broken a world record?

The greatest sportsperson of all time (not British) would have to be FloJo if we go off records, absolutely no question, but that somehow doesn’t feel right to me. Plus, I think she was also “assisted” to some extent. 😁
Well the op said greatest so I guess you can qualify that in many ways. Edwards was european, commonwealth, world and olympic champion. He wasn't a flash in the pan and has held an athletic record that hasn't been beaten in by anyone, I believe except him, when it was wind assisted so not ratified.

Given improved diets, health and training that is quite some achievement. Is he the greatest? Well thats subjective, but nevertheless my subjectivity is better than yours ;)

Hamilton, Taylor, McCoy, Farah, Bale, Rooney, Best, Fury, O'Sullivan, Hoy are 10 from the top of my head who are more successful

Rubbish

Murray played in the same period as probably the 3 greatest tennis players of all time. How many semi finals/finals did he lost because he came up against them. He would’ve easily got 10 or more Grand Slam if not for them.

Hamilton best car wins crap car no wins

Ye good point well made actually. You’ve changed my opinion on that

Snooker/darts are heavily dominated by the British isle

I am with you on JM's list. F1 is all about the car, darts and snooker, not enough people play the game so its best of a small bunch. Rooney???? Fury????? Hoy rode a bike so is disqualified, by the ops rules. Best, maybe, I can see why someone would pick him, great player, but not even sure he is the best footballer the uk has ever produced.

Not winning tournaments because he was against 3 better players doesn’t make someone a great. Boro would be top of the league if we didn’t have 3 better sides in the league by that logic

Hamilton won at least 2 championships without the best car, possibly 3

48 nations played on the PDC darts tour in 2022. Cricket only have something like 12 nations playing test cricket so that rules cricket out

Hamilton did win star in a reasonably priced car even beating the stig, who no one has mentioned as the greatest... booo hiss. However, F1 is very much a team sport and as I said above depeneds heavily on engineers to make the best of the rules given to them.

Rooney won everything at club level and had huge success with England, he has to be considered. Fury has won the lot in his sport

F1 definitely isn’t just about the car, if that was the case anyone could do it

Btw I added the non mechanical clause as other wise the winner is froome no question. To win one TDF is insane for anyone let alone a Brit but he is on another planet.

Every person on this list has a huge team behind them even if it’s not immediately obvious, no such thing as a solo sport

This has been mentioned previously the question was greatest. N ot sure how we are interpreting that but Rooney isn't even man utd greatest ever player. Kenny Dalglish was twice the player

edit I know dalglish didnt play for united.
