I can understand that Trump might ask some individual Gulf and European countries for 'support', but not to expect NATO as an organisation to do heavy lifting.

Would it help Trumps narrative to invoke article 5 knowing that NATO wouldn’t assist, or at least the countries that matter. Then he can rubber stamp his claim that they weren’t there for the US.

As far as I am aware there is legislation in place to stop any U.S. President from withdrawing from NATO without congressional approval.

Ah, well. Because he's also the CiC, the President can carry out certain military operations without a formal declaration of war. So effectively bypassing Congress.

As CiC could he just order US troops to stay in barracks if a NATO country were invaded, so NATO membership itself doesn't mean anything?

As far as I understand it Article 5 is quite vague and does not directly state that a nation has to become militarily involved when it is invoked.

Trump isn’t going to come to the aid of any nato member in need of help; perhaps he might with the uk still but unlikely.

He’d make an excuse not to get involved.

Trumps next project is Greenland; you watch and his reasoning behind it will be;

Europe can’t be trusted to come to the aid of America so we need Greenland for security purposes.

Greenland is the next crisis for NATO because Trump just wants to be in the constant spotlight and distract from Epstein.
