International driving licence Spain

The Spanish govt website says I don't need one but there's reports that hire car companies ask for it. Anyone have any experience of hiring a car in Spain recently and did they request one (I'm flying in to Malaga)?

I've just hired a car in Tenerife in the last week. Didn't even think about this. They just accepted my UK driving license that was issued in 2021.

I hire cars all the time in Lanzarote, every other month, last time three weeks ago- and you just need your UK one. That said they want to see the actual licence not a photo of it, in case you’ve had to surrender it in the UK. But uk licence is enough.

Several car rental websites still have the IDP in their T&C's if you drill down to it despite both Governments confirming that you don't need one. I've just booked a hire car and it is in there despite the fact that they probably won't ask to see it. The likely exception is that you may hit problems if you still have the old pink UK licence without a photo.
