Imminent Danger for EFL Clubs Future

With the Premier Lesgue meeting on Mondsy to discuss a possible ban on supporters inside grounds, surely its inevitable that the EFL will be forced to follow their lead.

Even if this is not immediately the case, walk up crowds will drop through the floor very quickly as the inevitable panic of an EPL ban kicks in.

This time of year will be about the worst time for this to happen in terms of cashflow for many smaller EFL clubs. The previous year's season ticket revenue will.be dwindling and crowds will be beginning to drop off for teams not in the mix for promotion.

Many EFL clubs are already hand to mouth at this time of year. An unplanned disappearance of gate receipts could well push many to the brink of insolvency very quickly.

The EPL will barely feel the pinch. TV revenues will more than compensate for the lack of gate income. In fact it could well be an increase in TV revenue is negotiated as games are televised behind closed doors. This could also be the case for the EFL too to some extent, but Macclesfield v Forest Green isnt going to generate the additional advertisers for the TV companies that Arsenal V Chelsea will. Recompense for lower EFL clubs is likely to be dismal.

With all this in mind, it may follow that the only way for the smaller clubs to survive this gathering storm is to look for support from the EPL. Are they likely to oblige?

Or will we allow a number of Clubs to simply go into Administration.

Very worrying times for the Football League.

For my own part if the season ends for watching this week I would never seek a pro rata refund on my Season Ticket.

No chance, unless the league decide to play behind closed doors off their own bat. Which they won't.

Might want to check your T+C's regarding refunds... I'd imagine there's something in there regarding this type of thing.

What have they done for fans in Italy? Or what happens when there's games put behind closed doors due to suspensions etc?

The refunds bit wasn’t my main point. Serious decisions will be taken in the next two weeks and the potential to play behind closed doors is more than possible.

Juventus-Inter, scheduled for 20:45 on Sunday 1 March at the Allianz Stadium, will be played behind closed doors. Lega Serie Acommunicated, in compliance with the Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers from 25 February 2020, “Further implementing provisions of the decree-law from 23 February 2020, n. 6, containing urgent measuresregarding the containment and managementof the epidemiological emergency that is COVID-19.”
Without prejudice to the validity of the provisions governing the purchase of tickets, the Club - considering the peculiarity of the national situation – is evaluating initiatives in favour of purchasers.

A quick hunt on twitter suggests no refunds are being given and poss legal action could be taken by fans groups.

The Antitrust Authority has initiated proceedings against 9 Serie A clubs (including Juve, Inter, Milan, Roma...) as season and single tickets do not provide for refunds in the event of stadium closure or matches postponed. A class action could not be excluded at this point.
