IMHO, the best footballer to play for the Boro made his debut this day 1973

When Graeme Souness wore the No10 shirt for our 2nd division clash at Craven Cottage & 1st game of the new year

The Boro finished the year on a high with a home win over Oxford United when Alan Foggon scored his 1st ever Boro goal on his 1st full game, after making 2 sub appearences since his signing

The Fulham away game was also Alan Foggon 1st away Boro game

Alan Foggon £10k & Graeme Souness £32k were Stan Andersons final signings for the Boro, Souness been his last, not 2 bad signings to be honest

Malcolm Smith scored his 5th goal of the season but unfortunately, it wasn't to be enough as Fulham ran out 2-1 winners

Stan Anderson picked the following team in what was his final league away game as our manager

Jim Platt
John Craggs
Gordon Jones
Nobby Stiles
Stuey Boam
Willie Maddren
Bill Gates
John Hickton
David Mills
Graeme Souness
Alan Foggon
Sub
Malcolm Smith, who replaced Souness in the 2nd half

Just 23 goals in 26 games! And 3 of them came in the home draw with Burnley in previous November.
Looks like scoring was a problem for the Boro back then, too!
But a little over 14 months later this team was promoted under a very canny manager!

Souness imho was a one off, still to this day, I have never seen a midfielder reach his high standards of attributes. Many have tried, a small few may have come close, but nobody (imho) has equalled or surpassed his quality in the role he played

I'd agree with that choice. Souness was the most complete midfielder I ever saw in a Boro shirt- strong tackler, great range of passing and knew where the goal was. Added to that he was very ambitious and determined.

World class central midfielder, the best I’ve seen in his position playing for anybody.

I still say he played the finest football of his career at the Boro no matter how many medals he won in an all star Liverpool team.

Yet another top quality player we were privileged to see wearing the shirt.

He was a bit dirty though. When interviewed after a rangers game when he was managing them, he was asked what he was going to do about the 9 outfield players that were booked. He answered, question the commitment of the tenth one.

I think Robson was as good if not better. Second best I've ever seen at Boro. No one comes anywhere near Juninho for me.
