Yes I know people don't retire at 65 anymore but l did!
So today is the 65th anniversary of my first Boro game when my Dad took me into Chicken Run via a "squeeze"

April 12th 1958
Boro 2 Blackburn Rovers 3
Goals
B Clough 2

Starting lineup:

GoalkeeperEsmond Million
Full backRay Bilcliff
Full backd*ck Robinson
Centre halfBrian Phillips
Left halfJoe Birbeck
Outside LeftEddie Holliday
Centre forwardBrian Clough
ForwardLindy Delapenha
ForwardAlan Peacock
Inside forwardDerek McLean
Inside Forward/Wing half B Harris

There have been many ups and downs since then but to say that Boro have been a big part of my life is an understatement.

Most important match
Boro v Port Vale at Hartlepool (Yes l really was there) without it the next 30+ years would not have happened.

I wonder how many who say they were at Hartlepool for Boro v Port Vale but weren't. - I was, and the following Tuesday v Hartlepool in the League Cup.

I remember that Boro forward line named and it contained 3 England Internationals, but it still could not get us promotion to the old First `Division because of the “dodgy “ defence.

1958, but a different game (the season opener) and I went on my own as you could as an eight-year-old in those days. My dad had no interest in football.

The reason Cloughie left
"I keep scoring but those buggers at the back keep letting them in."

I was at Hartlepool with my uncle who is sadly no longer with us, Archie Stephen's, two up and cruising but like so many Boro displays we ended up only drawing....

I was working behind the bar in Holland for that Port Vale match. Flicked the TV over to get BBC2's news and sport early evening and there we were, the national football highlight from the Vic.

As they came out onto the pitch we were saying
"Who's that" to half the team. By the end of the season they were all heroes

Esmond Million was involved too.
Ah! Esmond Million nearly as good as Des McPartland
Esmond was found guilty of taking a bribe to throw a match when playing for Bristol Rovers in 1963. He was banned for life
Unfortunately it was only £300 not £1000000.
