If you had to the chance to pick a trade to retrain in...

optician

low skill levels

high pay

stops at 5pm

no stress outside work

better worse better worse - just right.

not as good as it used to be though
I don't think you can regard an optician as low-skilled - there's hundreds of eye diseases and defects, nevermind other health problems which affect eyes

I have an eye defect from birth which around 3,000 people have in the entire UK

A decent trade....... Electrician / plumber etc. I imagine you will never be without work (if any good). Houses will always need electric and plumbing always goes t*ts up.

I always remember ripping my best mate from school when was on a YTS when we left school. He could never afford to go to football or on the lash. He's now a gas fitter with 2 vans and 3 lads. He makes a fecking fortune with nice house / car etc. That said he puts the hours in as he's money mad.

Engineering in renewable energy. It’s the future and I couldn’t see myself doing anything other than engineering even if in a different industry. Love fault finding, working with my hands and working with tools. I’d go mad sitting at a desk.

If I could roll back the years I'd definitely have gone down the YTS/ Apprentice route and picked up a "building" trade.

If my health allowed the train driver would be up there as well.

I remember going to Teesside Tertiary college and saying I wanted to do some form of engineering and they talked me out of it. BarStewards.

Interesting question. The amount of times I’ve said I wish I was XX when stressed at work, but the truth is I enjoy working in e-commerce.

I’ve often thought about getting skills that would allow me to cut costs on building my own place, like electrics / plumbing etc but not sure id want to do full time.

If I got to do the same all over again, I would have launched my own business at an earlier age instead of waiting to get experience.

I've always said that I would like to go back to the point when I chose my first job. I had 2 job offers on the table, one was for an YTS/engineering apprenticeship @ ICI, the other was an apprentice engineer in the Royal Navy....I opted for ICI and ballsed it up! Young, dumb and....well you know how it goes.
In hindsight the discipline of the Navy was really what I needed and I suspect I would be a lot more financially stable than I am now!

I'm lucky, I've been in the same job, same place for 35 years & I've loved it, apart from a little grey patch I can count on one hand the times I didn't want to go to work

One thing I would & should have done is go to night classes / courses on DIY, I'm next to useless

Cyber Security

There is going to be a HUGE demand in this field as everything goes digital and online. They are paid very handsomely as well.

Something hands on either building trade related or car related. Often watch the many hot rod shows on TV and think ‘I’d love to do that!’

I may be a bit odd in that I still like my job. It's interesting in that most times there's a requirement that needs a bit of research, design, sometimes a new piece of tech or a feature that needs proof of concept then do it all for real in a production environment. It fits the way I think and as a result I don't feel I would be much good at anything else as I am hopeless with my hands doing anything but tearing stuff down.
