If thats it for January.

I'm so impressed with the way the recruitment team and Carrick have gone about our business.

Archer was kept under wraps and we beat out 90% of the championship to get through most sought after young striker in the league. The best part about it, is we wanted a permanent, it was a signal we had funds and we were prepared to spend. Villa don't want him gone permanently but the signal of intent was wonderful to see.

Next up Dan Barlaser. The heir to Jonny Howson, already the divisions joint top assist machine who we had to show patience to get. The noises from Rotherham was the they weren't selling, we were prepared to wait for Summer but the players head was turned wanting to work under the gaffer. To get him for 950k rising to £1.5 million is a steal when surely under any other circumstances you'd have had to pay £4-£5 million.

Deadline day, no links what so ever coming out, but yet we've done so well absolutely nobody panicked. Little did we know Aaron Ramsey from Villa was already training with the team, fit and ready to go as that option across the whole front line.

On top of this we kept our best players, Akpom, Fry, Hackney and even Jones stayed put, I still firmly believe If he can get his head right we have a great option to start pr from the bench.

Not many names linked however it was ones that made sense, especially in the summer.
Ardon Jashiri and Van Hecke are to I'd like to see walk through the door in pre season.

We may see Muniz go however its always sad when a fan favourite departs.
Duncan Watmore has been such a good signing on a free when nobody else would take a chance and he's welcome back any time and I'm sure he'll get an amazing reception when he does come back with Milwall. His classy Goodbye message is echoed by the fan base and I hope he stays fit and smashes it.
But yet again great business to get a fee for a player that will have been leaving for free.

Stress free deadline days are kinda nice, wouldn't mind another surprise later like!

January gets 8/10 from me.
Well done Boro

Agree, we looked short in CM and in the attacking third. Addressed both of those issues with genuine quality.

Of others we were linked with Jashari excited me the most - would love to see him arrive in the Summer - but as it's genuinely uncertain which division that will be in, it's a nice problem to have!

I think the defence will need some surgery in the Summer too, doesn't look like Djiksteel or McNair are favoured long term but gotta trust the model at present.

What’s good to see is the fans seem to be on board with this new approach of only bringing in the right players as they become available.

Hopefully we have seen the back of knee jerk signings which turn out to be stinkers with no sell on value.

I seem to remember fans going into meltdown at the back end of the last January window .. what a difference a year makes!

Steffen/Roberts

Smith/Diksteel
Fry/McNair
Lenihan/Clarke
Giles/Bola

Forss/Jones
Barlaser/Crooks
Hackney/Howson
McGree/Mowett

Akpom/Ramsey
Archer/Muniz

Is that it? Trying to put players in a 4-4-2.. but a number of players that play different positions take up different roles.

3 maybe 4 from Kieren Scott.. certainly stacks up up if Paddy McNair was maybe off..

I guess I’m missing a few youth players from the mix.

Might we be signing one of our loan players?

Balogun snd Connolly we’re decent loan signings . McGree was a good signing too.

Archer and Ramsey are good loan signings.. seems a long time since we’ve flipped through the Aston Villa catalogue to sort out our transfer window! Nice work Danksy!

Dan Barlaser is very much the Riley McGree of this January window.

Sound midfielder that improves the squad and brings good vibes. Two loan players that know each other and should settle in quite quickly!

Dan Barlaser knows Matt Crooks and Ryan Giles too!

Carrick must be an absolute pleasure for Scott, Bausor, etc. to work with. I don't know how much say he has with the signings, but he just gets on with it and looks to integrate players into the squad and playing style. You never hear him demanding certain players or his players, or moaning we are short of this, that or the other. With most managers, they have their favourites, whether it be players or staff they have worked with previously. With Carrick, he trusts his own ability and I think he could work whatever he is given. It's early days, but he could have a very promising managerial career if he keeps this up. Any top flight club would love to have him. Let's hope he's here for a few years yet.

I think we’re starting to see Kieran Scott starting to deliver and being trusted by SG. I’m sure Scott wasn’t fully on board with Wilder, but since that project collapsed, maybe Steve gave Scott a freer rein to not only help us attract Carrick, but also the Villa coach and players that fit a new club profile.
The club feels calmer from top to bottom

Makes more sense with a 4231 I think.

Mowatt, howson, hackney, barlaser CMs

Jones/forss
Akpom/crooks
McGree/ramsey

Archer/Muniz/hoppe

Admittedly Crooks has played more as a 9 than a 10 but almost works!

Not convinced it’s a great window, yes some good signings but so much reliance on loan players again which doesn’t really benefit us long term.
If we go up which we have a decent chance of making the playoffs then yes it works, but a strong chance we don’t then it’s another full rebuild in the summer as we seem to do every summer. Continuity has to be key to build a good squad and we just don’t seem to ever have that

It’s definitely a better window than we have had for a good while at least

Ramirez, Bamford, Vossen, Tomlin.. all loan signings.

Realistically how much do we have to spend to get the players we have in out squad?

Zack Steffen £5m - Randolph
Ryan Giles £7m - Flint
Alex Mowett £5m - McNair
Aaron Ramsey £8m - Saville
Rodrigo Muniz £7m - Fletcher
Cameron Archer £15m - Assombalonga

£47m.. that’s like our promotion to the premier league spending.

too much reliance? out of the six.. two are hardly featuring, one has played one game and another not at all. Steffen and Giles are doing well.. hopefully we can improve on what we’ve already achieved! UTB!
