If Robbo had said no in '94

Hard to think of anyone with the status and pulling power of Robbo who we could have realistically attracted.

Souness was out of work which ticks one of the boxes anyway.

It was about a year before Peter Reid took over at the mackems. Think he‘d returned to playing with Southampton around then after he’d been sacked at Man City.

I remember on FA Cup Final morning 1994, there was footage of Robbo in a rowing boat on a lake. He was asked by the presenter if he was calling it the "Good Ship Middlesbrough". He just laughed.
That was obviously in May and it must have been common knowledge by then that he was coming.
I suppose there can't have been too much time for speculation really, unless it was announced that Lennie was leaving well before the end of the season.

I think everyone knew Lennie was leaving pretty early on. He had to sell players and wasn’t really able to bring in any replacements, though he did add Steve Vickers that season. He had to muddle through with kids and just make sure we finish in the middle of the table. I imagine the cash was being put into a pot for Robbo and we were planning ahead.

I think Lennie actually helped the club get Robbo in didn’t he? That’s a measure of the man.

The deal for Robson must’ve been done long before the end of the season TBH.

What was Wenger up to then?

What a different path we might have gone down with 'le professor' at the helm, rather than 'le pl55 up with the boys' leading the charge when we were a financial powerhouse...................

Wenger was at Marseille until the end of 94, then he went to Japan.
It was 20 years too early for Gibbo to consider a foreign manager anyway.

I remember shortly before he was appointed Bob Mortimer appearing on a TV show at the time in a feature about the Boro, might have been fantasy football league, can’t recall the detail. Anyway he was stood on the pitch and he said to the camera “I’m really happy because I’ve just been told ****** is going to be our new manager”. They blanked out Robbo’s name.

Anyone else recall this or am I going potty?

Here we are, Gareth Southgate scored that day as well (for Palace).

The show was Standing Room Only; presented by Simon O'Brien from Brookside and Shelley (wife of Neil) Webb. I think she dumped him when he became a postman.

I'm reasonably sure that's me and my late Mrs in the long shot of the Holgate early on. She's got a white jacket on.

Richard Liburd's only goal for Boro in that Palace match as well. We cut him the week later.

There was a segment on YTS players on that show. One week it was Neil Illman. And I’ve thought about it, on average, at least once a month for the past 28 years.
