hi all
My son is an undergraduate in construction engineering project management degree at Northumbria University, and looking for a one year work placement in the sector but isnt having much luck and the university dont appear to be doing much to support either.
Ive tried some of my contacts but havent really got anywhere.
Does anyone work in the sector, and would be able to suggest places to try? or would their company be willing to consider him for either work experience over the summer, or the one year before September 2023?
Ive watched him try for loads of apprenticeships and always get to the last 2 or 3, but not get the offer, which is why he then went down the university route, he works hard and is willing to try most roles within that sector but he just needs a break.
thanks for reading

I know this may sound like a daft suggestion but has he tried Teesside Uni. They do a lot of work with companies regarding placements and assuming he's local they may be willing to help or at least point him in the right direction. The only email I have is business@tees.ac.uk but that's where the info regarding business seminars comes from and so might be a good place to start.

i wasnt sure they would help a student from a different university, but he is local so ill email and see - thanks for the email address

Has he tried looking at Assistant Site Engineer (chain lad) ? Don’t know if he intends to do management in his year out or is open to all disciplines. Also, does he have a car/have use of a car?

he is open to all disciplines in the sector as his degree covers quite a range of areas. he has his own car and will travel or even relocate for the time if necessary.
thanks

List of local companies to approach below (not exhaustive). As mentioned, he's probably going to have to serve some time on-site but this will get him valuable experience.

Is he on LinkedIn? If not, tell him to make a profile, get some contacts and put a post out and ask his contacts to share. May be worth speaking to CECA North East as well https://www.ceca.co.uk/north-east

ESH Construction
Tilbury Douglas
JN Bentley
Costain
Bowmer & Kirkland
Seymour Civil Engineering Contractors

Has he tried Engineering design companies? Not outfits that directly undertake construction but those who provide construction management service (project management), (which sounds like his area of interest).

I'm thinking someone like WSP (currently opening a new office on Teesside)
or PX ltd in Stockton
Or Projex Solutions (a good little outfit who have a main office near Leeds but also have people at Wilton)

Don’t take this the wrong way, but it might come across better if he emails them, rather than you.

Has he considered the rail industry? There’s plenty of high profile projects going on at the moment. I know Amey are recruiting for graduate and placements civil engineers on TRU West at the moment.

Totally agree with that

It might be worth him putting the miles in and calling into site offices. I know that is a thing of the past and it is hard to get on sites but I know it worked for my youngest son.

He's got nothing to loose but his time and plenty to gain.

I'd try John Sisk & Son. They've been Ireland's biggest construction company for decades now, and are increasingly present in the UK - especially England. They're expanding all the time, with tonnes of projects on the go up and down the country. They're already the prime contractor on all sorts of stuff and are getting to be a similar scale to Carillion (before they went bang obviously!). I know they have offices in York just near the railway station.

Might sound daft but Contact Ben Houchen (privately) and put your case to him.

As he is pushing all this new developement and projects across the region, he may offer some advice.
